Kolkata, July 3 (NationPress) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee reached out to Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday, expressing her alarm regarding the growing influence of social media content. She highlighted how this trend is presenting significant challenges to public tranquility.
In the correspondence, a copy of which was obtained by IANS, the Chief Minister urged the Union Home Minister to implement rigorous legal measures that could serve as a robust deterrent against the creation and spread of provocative online content and criminal activities in the digital realm.
She emphasized that the existing legal framework and its enforcement need substantial enhancement to keep pace with the rapidly changing digital landscape and the sophisticated tactics used by malicious entities.
“Additionally, it is crucial to promote widespread awareness regarding the responsible usage and consumption of digital media. Many individuals remain unaware of the dangers linked to consuming and sharing unverified information. This issue is rapidly escalating across the nation,” the letter stated.
In her correspondence, the Chief Minister also underscored the importance of awareness programs, digital literacy initiatives, and community engagement efforts to empower citizens to critically assess online information and promptly identify suspicious activities.
She pointed out that recently, incendiary narratives, misleading articles, and fake videos have been circulating on social media, significantly contributing to the escalation of criminal behaviors among certain segments of society.
According to her, in addition to spreading misinformation, such posts could potentially offend religious sentiments, inciting communal violence and disrupting social harmony, which may lead to crimes against women.
This letter comes at a time when social media is inundated with criticisms directed at the West Bengal government and the Trinamool Congress regarding various issues, including the cash-for-school job case, crimes against women following the recent rape of a law college student on campus, and rising communal tensions in various regions of the state, among other concerns.
