What to Expect from Mamata Banerjee’s Rally in Singur Today?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Jan 28 (NationPress) The atmosphere in Singur, the former site of Tata Motors' Nano car project, is charged with excitement as the Chief Minister prepares to deliver a significant message at a scheduled rally today.
This fervor is fueled by two main factors. First, the Chief Minister is set to head to New Delhi right after the Singur rally, where she aims to build a coalition among opposition parties against the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in various states and union territories, including West Bengal.
As a result, Trinamool Congress workers are eager to hear if the Chief Minister will address any political issues regarding this matter before her departure for the capital.
Secondly, her rally coincides closely with the location where Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a public gathering on January 18. Many believed that the Prime Minister would refer to the history of Tata Motors' Nano project withdrawal in 2008 and discuss future investment opportunities in the area; however, he did not touch upon these topics at all.
In fact, during his speech, the Prime Minister failed to even mention Tata Motors’ exit from Singur. This lack of acknowledgment has heightened the anticipation surrounding whether the Chief Minister will unveil her plans for attracting significant investments to Singur in her address later today.
It's worth noting that the exit of the project from Singur resulted from a tumultuous movement led by the Trinamool Congress, then in opposition, spearheaded by Mamata Banerjee, against land acquisition for the initiative.
After the announcement by the late Ratan Tata, then chairman of Tata Group, regarding the withdrawal of the Nano project from Singur on October 3, 2008, the project subsequently moved to Sanand in Gujarat, where Narendra Modi was the Chief Minister.
Ratan Tata expressed his emotional sentiments on that day, stating, "I said that I will not pull out from Singur even if a gun is put to my head. But Miss Banerjee just pulled the trigger."
Meanwhile, a controversy has emerged regarding the decision of Kolkata Mayor and Minister of Municipal Affairs and Urban Development, Firhad Hakim, to dispatch sprinklers from Kolkata to Singur. These sprinklers are intended to douse the dust at the rally site ahead of the Chief Minister’s address. Reports indicate that five water-sprinklers have been sent from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation for this purpose.
