Are Residents Being Coerced to Attend the CM's Rally?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Jan 28 (NationPress) Just a few hours ahead of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's vital public rally in Singur, situated in the Hooghly district, the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, shared a claimed audio recording featuring a local female leader from the Trinamool Congress and a member of a Self-Help Group.
In the audio, the leader allegedly threatened a female member of the Self-Help Group, suggesting that benefits from various welfare programs would be halted if they did not attend the rally.
IANS could not independently verify the authenticity of this audio recording.
“There will be no justifiable reason for absence at the gathering. If anyone is absent, I will pass her name and contact information to the Block Development Officer. Should you inquire later as to why certain work has not been completed or if you face any deprivation, you will need to seek that clarification from the Block Development Officer,” the Trinamool Congress leader purportedly stated in the audio.
The LoP asserted that this incident demonstrates that attendees are not gathering at the Chief Minister’s rally voluntarily, but under pressure.
“People are no longer coming on their own accord to hear the Chief Minister's grandiose speeches. There is a significant lack of spontaneous attendees, prompting strict directives for the Self-Help Groups to comply and appear at the rally,” he remarked.
“Otherwise, the list of opportunities and benefits they will miss out on is extensive,” Adhikari alleged.
Nonetheless, the anticipation for Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s rally in Singur later today arises from two factors. Firstly, the Chief Minister is set to head to New Delhi immediately after this rally, reportedly to rally support among Opposition parties against the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) affecting several states and Union Territories, including West Bengal.
Secondly, this rally's location is significant as it is close to where Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a public rally on January 18, further amplifying its importance.
