Bengaluru, March 25 (NationPress) Before Mangesh Yadav ever threw a ball in the realm of professional cricket, his father, Ramavadh Yadav, toiled tirelessly overnight, pondering how to fund his son’s aspirations. He committed all his savings to a boy who started playing cricket in a simple courtyard alongside his mother. Today, Mangesh Yadav boasts a lucrative contract worth Rs. 5.2 crore with the reigning champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

Reflecting on their financial struggles, Mangesh’s father remarked, “I had to endure immense hardships for money. There were nights when I couldn’t sleep, worrying about how I would finance his dreams. The life of a truck driver offers little—there’s no time to eat or even bathe. When the truck is full, you're concerned about unloading, and when it’s empty, you’re anxious about refilling it.”

Aged 23, hailing from Borgaon in Madhya Pradesh’s Chhindwara district, Mangesh grew up under humble circumstances, honing his cricket skills from an early age. His uncle recognized his potential during tennis tournaments and encouraged him to go to Delhi for training under coach Phool Chand Sharma.

Mangesh acknowledged, “If I am playing cricket today, it’s thanks to Phool Chand sir.”

“When I arrived in Delhi, my father had painstakingly given me Rs. 24,000. I can’t even recall how quickly that money vanished within the first month.”

His father frequently reached out to acquaintances to gather the necessary funds for Mangesh’s training.

Phool Chand Sharma shared, “Mangesh was staying with someone in Delhi. I noticed he was a talented bowler, yet he didn’t even have enough to eat. I invited him to stay at the hostel, where his journey truly began. I don’t care about a player’s financial status; if they’re good, they can come, eat, stay, and practice.”

Mangesh also reflected on a brief period when he lost his focus. “I began to grow lazy. One day, sir told me to pack my bag and go home. After some time, I apologized and promised it wouldn’t happen again. I then realized what I was missing and what I had. I considered my family and thought, ‘Dad is working so hard. Everyone is so dedicated to my success.’”

Eager to make the most of his chance, the young fast bowler fully committed to his training. He participated in the DDCA league, various local tournaments, and even joined the UP U-19 camp, yet the next step remained elusive.

His father expressed, “There were instances when he traveled to selection camps only to be told his name had been called by mistake. In those moments, I felt helpless, like I had made a grave error by nurturing my son’s dream.”

The turning point arrived during the Madhya Pradesh T20 League, where Mangesh claimed 14 wickets across six matches, boasting an impressive average of 12.00. After competing for Madhya Pradesh in domestic cricket alongside RCB captain Rajat Patidar, he finally received the much-anticipated call from Royal Challengers Bangalore.

During the trials, his ability to adapt to various match situations was thoroughly assessed. “At the trials, DK [Dinesh Karthik] sir approached me and said, ‘You are bowling well. Now demonstrate this ball.’ He had me bowl in diverse scenarios: with the new ball, the fifth over, the tenth over, the fourteenth over, and even the eighteenth and twentieth overs. It was astonishing to witness how a player at that level strategizes.”

Following the auction, Mangesh expressed gratitude to the coach who had supported him throughout his journey. “Upon returning to the club, I was eager to meet him and show my gratitude for trusting me and investing so much into my future.”

Years of his father's sacrifices had finally yielded results. “When my father championed my cricket dreams, many in our extended family and community saw him as a fool, believing I would be ruined. I am just so grateful. That’s what makes me emotional; my father can now walk with pride.”

His father added, “I never imagined a truck driver could gain such respect. Mangesh has done far more for me than I could ever have wished for.”
