Varanasi, Jan 14 (NationPress) The historic Manikarnika Ghat in Varanasi is presently undergoing significant development aimed at enhancing cremation management and public amenities. During this ongoing initiative, the district administration has affirmed that no temples or cultural monuments are at risk and has warned the public against the misinformation circulating via viral images and AI-generated videos on social media.
Varanasi's District Magistrate, Satyendra Kumar, stated that stringent measures will be enforced against those attempting to mislead the public and disrupt the sanctity of the ghat.
Known as the prominent cremation ground of Varanasi, Manikarnika Ghat sees the cremation of hundreds of thousands of bodies annually. Due to the high volume of cremations, the ghat faces numerous challenges such as space constraints, cleanliness, and the need for proper facilities. To address these concerns, a comprehensive development project is being executed at the ghat to enhance and streamline operations.
DM Satyendra Kumar mentioned that as part of the project, new, organized platforms are being constructed for cremations, providing greater convenience for devotees and grieving families.
In a statement to the media, the District Magistrate noted that post-cremation, remaining ashes often disperse to nearby homes and areas, causing issues for locals. To tackle this, a tall chimney is being erected at the ghat for proper ash disposal. Furthermore, systematic arrangements for the storage of wood used in cremations are being established to prevent disorder and maintain hygiene. Improvements are also being made for individuals attending the mundan (head-shaving) ritual, who previously faced various difficulties.
He elaborated that this project has been in progress for over a year. Under this initiative, new construction is taking place in the kutcha (unpaved) regions of the ghat, while the pucca (permanent) sections are being restored and reinforced. The aim is to preserve the traditional identity of the ghat while upgrading facilities to meet modern standards, ensuring that visitors encounter no inconveniences.
Meanwhile, the District Magistrate addressed the situation regarding certain photos and videos that have gone viral on social media. He clarified that these images pertain to various artworks created on the ghats and stairways, and that some individuals are disseminating false information using AI to produce misleading videos about temples and idols.
He confirmed that all artworks and sculptures at the ghat are protected by the Department of Culture and will undergo restoration. The temples located at Manikarnika Ghat will remain secure and intact.
The District Magistrate also mentioned that those spreading rumors on social media are being identified and monitored closely. If necessary, firm action will be taken against such individuals in accordance with the law. The administration's unequivocal objective is to ensure that the sanctity of Manikarnika Ghat, its cultural heritage, and the faith of devotees remain unharmed under any circumstances.
