Imphal, March 8 (NationPress) On Sunday, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh of Manipur declared a significant allocation of Rs 350 crore in the forthcoming state budget aimed at supporting women who have suffered due to the recent ethnic unrest in the region.

The announcement was made during the International Women’s Day 2026 celebration, which took place at the City Convention Centre in Imphal, themed “Rights, Justice, Action for All Women and Girls.”
During his address, Singh expressed hope that those who were displaced by the profound crisis in Manipur would soon be able to return to their homes.
He praised the bravery and strength of Manipuri women, highlighting their essential contributions to the economy and their participation in various political and social movements throughout the state’s history.
Singh acknowledged the struggles of many widowed mothers who have successfully raised and educated their children despite facing significant challenges, often by selling vegetables or engaging in traditional handloom work. “We are their sons and daughters,” he remarked, recognizing the tremendous sacrifices made by women in society.
MLA Sagolshem Kebi Devi, who has consistently participated in International Women’s Day events, stressed the importance of women being informed about government welfare programs and constitutional rights to shield themselves against discrimination and injustice.
She encouraged greater involvement from women in such initiatives.
Chief Secretary Puneet Kumar Goel emphasized the importance of this day in acknowledging women’s invaluable contributions to society, stating, “In Manipur, women have always been the enduring pillars of society.”
The event featured an audio-visual presentation on Mission Shakti, focusing on women’s safety, security, and economic empowerment. During the celebration, the Chief Minister honored Nameirakpam Kunjarani Devi, a weightlifter and Padma Shri awardee, along with Mangka Mayanglambam, a celebrated Manipuri folk singer.
The program, organized by the Department of Social Welfare, was attended by notable figures including Home Minister Konthoujam Govindas Singh, Tourism Minister Khuraijam Loken Singh, several MLAs, and senior officials from various departments.
The Budget session of the Manipur Legislative Assembly is set to resume on Monday (March 9), where several key issues will be discussed. According to Assembly sources, the session will last until March 17, comprising a total of seven sittings. Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh is expected to present the state budget for the 2026-27 financial year on the first day of the Assembly session on Monday.
