Manipur CM Singh urges unity at Mayang-Imphal sports hall launch
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Sunday, 25 May 2025, called on all communities in the conflict-affected state to set aside past grievances and work collectively toward development and peace. Speaking at the inauguration of a newly constructed Multipurpose Indoor Hall under the Khelo India scheme at Charoipung Playground in Mayang-Imphal, Singh acknowledged the immense suffering caused by the state's ongoing ethnic crisis and made a direct appeal for unity.
CM's Appeal for Reconciliation
'We must forget the past and move forward towards development in the state,' Singh told the gathering at the event. The Chief Minister's remarks come against the backdrop of an ethnic conflict that has displaced thousands of families across Manipur, straining communities and stretching state resources. This is among the most direct public appeals for reconciliation Singh has made at a constituency-level event.
Earlier in the day, Singh visited the relief camp at Pravabati College in Mayang, approximately 26 km from Imphal city, where he provided ₹1 lakh in financial assistance to a member of an Internally Displaced Person (IDP) family facing serious health complications. He also interacted with IDP representatives and the college students' union at the campus fitness centre.
Sports Infrastructure and Constituency Commitments
At the Charoipung Playground inauguration, Singh motivated young athletes from the Mayang-Imphal Assembly constituency, asserting that India's sporting achievements are incomplete without Manipur's players, and Manipur's sporting identity is equally incomplete without those from this constituency. He declared the newly built indoor stadium open to the public.
Responding to demands raised by local MLA Kongkham Robindro Singh, the Chief Minister assured constituents that a football turf would be constructed nearby. He also committed to earmarking funds from the state budget for a boys' and girls' hostel for players, and announced that construction of an approach road would be initiated. Commendation certificates and plaques were distributed to players and coaches who have brought recognition to the state.
Education and Health Infrastructure
Singh also inaugurated a 100-bedded girls' hostel, 8 classrooms, a library, and a science and craft block at Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV) in Heigum Yangbi, Mayang-Imphal, Imphal West district. He subsequently visited a 100-bedded hospital under the Wangoi Sub-Division, reviewed the status of ongoing construction work, and assured local women that the facility would be made functional shortly.
SHGs, Community Outreach and Home Minister's Address
Singh encouraged residents to form Self Help Groups (SHGs), noting that the government has already sanctioned approximately ₹350 crore that could benefit communities during the Ningol Chakouba festival. He also met with the All Mayang-Imphal Muslim Youth Development Organisation (AMIMYDO) at the AMIMYDO Bengoon ground and said a proposal for a volleyball court would be examined.
Manipur Home Minister Konthoujam Govindas Singh, delivering the presidential address at the indoor hall inauguration, highlighted the constituency's progress in education, sports, and infrastructure over recent years. He also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for establishing the National Sports University in Manipur, recognising the state's sporting potential. With infrastructure pledges now on record, attention will turn to whether delivery timelines hold as the state navigates its path toward normalcy.
