Imphal, June 19 (NationPress) The Governor of Manipur, Ajay Kumar Bhalla, pledged on Thursday to initiate appropriate legal measures regarding the murder of 29-year-old physically challenged individual, Chesam Abdul Kadir, which occurred last week.
An official from Raj Bhavan reported that a delegation, spearheaded by National People’s Party (NPP) MLA Khuraijam Loken Singh, accompanied by members of the Joint Action Committee, met with the Governor to demand decisive action against the offenders.
The delegation presented a memorandum to Bhalla, emphasizing the critical necessity to swiftly apprehend the culprits and to ensure justice is served in a timely and transparent manner.
The Governor attentively listened to the representatives and assured them that suitable legal action would be pursued without hesitation, according to the official.
The meeting also included Director General of Police Rajiv Singh. In a related development, the Manipur Police apprehended nine individuals, which includes six members of the Meitei radical group Arambai Tenggol, in connection with the disappearance and subsequent murder of the physically challenged Chesam Abdul Kadir, whose remains were discovered along the banks of the Nambul River, sparking widespread demonstrations.
A total of five vehicles, including three Gypsies, have been confiscated in connection with this case. Kadir, a resident of Imphal West district, was reported missing on June 11. He was part of the Meitei Pangal (Muslim) community and was allegedly accused of theft, leading to his assault before he went missing.
A criminal case has been initiated, and a comprehensive investigation is currently underway, as stated by the police, who confirmed that nine suspects have been arrested.
They also requested the public to assist with the investigation, remain calm, and refrain from believing unverified reports.
The incident has ignited outrage throughout the state, especially among the Meitei Pangal (Muslim) community. The Manipur Meitei Pangal Welfare Organisation (MMWO) has vehemently denounced the alleged kidnapping and murder of Abdul Kadir. MMWO Secretary General Firoz Khan has called for severe penalties for those implicated in this incident.
Numerous other organizations have characterized the act as a “heartless crime” and have linked it to a disturbing trend of violence, including killings, abductions, and extortion, that has been reported in Manipur’s valley region over the last two years.
