Chennai, Feb 10 (NationPress) The second phase of the acclaimed Blue Flag Beach development at Chennai's renowned Marina Beach is on the verge of completion, with local authorities confirming that nearly 90 percent of the project has been finalized.

The enhanced section is anticipated to be accessible to the public by the close of this month, representing yet another stride in Tamil Nadu's ambitions to obtain international recognition for its coastline.

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC), which is leading the initiative, is executing the Marina Blue Flag project in four segments to comply with the rigorous environmental, safety, and cleanliness criteria needed for Blue Flag certification - a globally acknowledged eco-label granted to sustainable and well-managed beaches.

The initial phase, developed adjacent to the Marina swimming pool, cost Rs 7.31 crore and has already been inaugurated for visitors.

Officials indicate that the area has transformed into a significant attraction, drawing over 60,000 visitors daily since its opening.

Motivated by the positive response, the GCC initiated the second phase last month opposite the historic Vivekananda House.

With an estimated investment of Rs 7 crore, this phase aims to improve both aesthetics and public amenities while ensuring environmental sustainability.

Numerous eco-friendly features have been introduced, including 60 bamboo seating units and 30 bamboo umbrellas to offer shaded resting spots. Four observation towers have been constructed for safety and oversight.

Children's play areas have been established at four locations, alongside two quiet study zones and designated selfie spots to enhance the overall visitor experience.

Civic officials emphasized the importance of inclusivity and sanitation, with separate toilet facilities constructed for men, women, transgender individuals, and persons with disabilities.

Bamboo trash bins have been strategically placed throughout the area to combat littering, and machines to discourage plastic bag usage will soon be installed to foster sustainable practices.

Authorities are optimistic that all remaining tasks will be finalized by February 17, after which the revitalized beachfront will be inaugurated for public use. Currently, Kovalam Beach remains the sole Blue Flag-certified beach in Tamil Nadu.

However, the state government is actively pursuing certification for Marina, as well as beaches in Cuddalore, Ramanathapuram, and Thoothukudi, with the goal of elevating Tamil Nadu's coastline to global standards.

Point of View

The development of Marina Beach into a Blue Flag Beach signifies a pivotal move towards sustainable tourism. The Greater Chennai Corporation's efforts reflect a growing awareness of environmental responsibility, aiming to position Tamil Nadu as a leader in coastal management and eco-tourism.
