Cairns, Aug 15 (NationPress) South Africa's captain Aiden Markram has announced his decision to persist in his new opening position within the T20I squad, aiming to accommodate more middle-order batsmen. The three-match T20I series is currently tied at 1-1, with South Africa and Australia set to clash in the decisive match on Saturday in Cairns.
Markram had an impressive IPL 2025 season as an opener for Lucknow Super Giants, notching up five fifties in 13 innings with a strike rate of 148.82. However, he has not surpassed fifty in T20Is since October 2022.
“Upon reviewing our team and the players available, we believe that opening is the most suitable role for me. We have players in the middle order who possess greater destructive capabilities than I do, so it makes sense for me and Ricks (Ryan Rickelton) to bat at the top,” Markram stated.
“I experimented with this role during the IPL and am now implementing it at the international level. It’s an exhilarating position to be in. Batting during the powerplay is always rewarding, and my aim is to provide our team with a robust start,” he added to the reporters.
Markram’s opening partnerships with Rickelton have yielded scores of 12 and 34 thus far. Although number three Lhuan-dre Pretorius has yet to make an impact, Dewald Brevis has brought some joy, scoring an unbeaten 125 in the second T20I.
In addition to his batting, Markram also provides an off-spin bowling option and has occasionally taken the new ball, including dismissing Travis Head in the second T20I in Darwin. “It’s a daunting challenge. The game has evolved, and I’m not sure I want to be a bowler,” he remarked.
“There will be times when the pitch may seem slower or offer something, and I take that chance. My approach is to trust my instincts and reflect post-game on what could have been,” he mentioned.
With South Africa securing only one victory in their last nine bilateral T20I series, including a loss in the tri-series final against New Zealand, Markram’s focus is on changing that trend this Saturday. “It feels like we’re headed in the right direction. The series so far has been encouraging, with our bowlers performing admirably.”
“The last game showcased our batters well, but it was primarily Brevis’s individual performance (he scored an unbeaten 125). It presents a great challenge for our batters tomorrow to perform cohesively and put up a strong score,” he concluded.
