Key Takeaways
Ujjain, Feb 21 (NationPress) A second-year MBBS student, Harshit Mehra (20), tragically lost his life after being struck by a speeding truck outside the Ruxmaniben Deepchand Gardi (RD Gardi) Medical College in Madhya Pradesh's Ujjain district on Saturday, according to police reports.
As per the authorities, the fatal incident occurred while Harshit was commuting from his hostel to the college. The accident took place on Agar Road, within the Chimanganj police station area in Ujjain.
Harshit, who was living in the college hostel, was riding his motorcycle when a truck coming from the Agar Road direction collided with him near the college entrance. The collision was devastating, and he succumbed to his injuries at the scene, as per police officials.
In response to the incident, fellow students and college staff organized a protest by blocking the road and laying the victim’s body in the area. The protesting students claimed that the lack of speed breakers and poor traffic management near the college entrance were contributing factors to the accident.
Upon learning of the road blockade, officials from the Chimanganj police station, along with City Superintendent of Police (CSP) Pushpa Prajapati, arrived at the scene and engaged in discussions with the protesting students.
The demonstration was called off after police officials guaranteed that suitable traffic safety measures, including speed control setups, would be put in place near the college.
Authorities reported that the truck driver, who fled the scene post-accident, was later located and arrested. Legal actions are underway regarding the incident.
College officials mentioned that Harshit was the only child in his family, with his father having passed away previously. His classmates and instructors expressed their sorrow over the loss, describing him as a dedicated and gifted student.
Students also remembered Harshit for his active participation in extracurricular activities and his passion for music.
Dr. Ruchi Mishra from the Physiotherapy Department remarked, “The entire college community is in mourning over Harshit’s tragic death.”
