Mexico City, Sep 25 (NationPress) The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, has strongly criticized the immigration enforcement actions executed by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), stating that a formal diplomatic note was dispatched to Washington demanding an inquiry into the recent fatalities of two Mexican citizens.
"A diplomatic note was sent yesterday regarding this matter, requesting comprehensive investigations and accountability for any human rights abuses," the president declared during her daily press briefing on Wednesday (local time).
According to reports from Xinhua, Mexican migrants Ismael Ayala-Uribe and Silverio Villegas Gonzalez lost their lives after being detained during ICE operations in the United States.
Sheinbaum expressed her sorrow over the increasing criminalization of migrants in the U.S. and emphasized her administration's efforts to support Mexican nationals abroad, including setting up an emergency hotline and enhancing services that provide legal and technical guidance.
The U.S. government's stringent immigration policies not only affect Mexicans but also have repercussions on the U.S. economy, as business owners in the agricultural and services sectors face challenges in hiring workers, Sheinbaum noted.
The president reaffirmed that Mexicans residing in the United States—regardless of their generational status—play a crucial role in both the U.S. economy and contribute to Mexico's economy through remittances.
"We reject such treatment and the raids carried out, which instill fear and anxiety among our people," she added.
On September 9, Sheinbaum had previously denounced the U.S. raids on migrants as "unjust," reiterating that her government has protocols in place to assist affected Mexican nationals.
During her daily press conference, she mentioned that following these incidents, alerts are issued to Mexico's representatives in the United States, who promptly reach out to local authorities to confirm the status of any detained Mexicans.
She emphasized that the actions taken by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Customs and Border Protection are "unjust."
Sheinbaum advocates for comprehensive immigration reform to acknowledge the significant contributions of migrants to the U.S. economy, and has bolstered Mexico's consular services in the U.S. to better assist citizens facing detention or deportation.
The Mexican government reported that at least 26 Mexican nationals were detained during the immigration operations in the southern U.S. state of Georgia.
