Aizawl, Feb 18 (NationPress) Thanks to a remarkable increase in tourist arrivals, particularly with a notable influx of international visitors, Mizoram has established itself as the fastest-growing tourist destination among the eight states of the Northeast, officials announced on Wednesday.
A senior representative from the Mizoram Tourism Department disclosed that the state experienced a total of 679,607 tourists from April to December 2025, comprising 670,001 domestic individuals and 9,606 international travelers. This surge has exceeded the previous year's total tourist figures by 29.50 percent, indicating a significant boost in tourism during this timeframe.
The official noted that December 2025 witnessed an all-time high in tourist visits to the state, with 133,520 arrivals, marking a 122.11 percent increase compared to the same month in 2024. “This continuous rise in tourist numbers has positioned Mizoram as the leading state for tourism growth in the Northeastern region,” the official emphasized.
Additionally, the Tourism Department received the Emerging Eco and Nature Retreat Award during the 10th International Tourism Conclave and Travel Awards held in New Delhi in July 2025.
The inaugural Mizoram Travel Fest, which took place from October 8-10, 2025, in Aizawl, featured a cooking contest, B2B meetings, an investors’ summit, and a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Tourism Department and the Department of Environment, Forests and Climate Change aimed at enhancing eco-tourism in the area.
To improve basic amenities at Vangchhia, the Tourism Ministry allocated Rs 5.47 crores under the PRASHAD (Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual Augmentation Drive) initiative.
The remarkable Vangchhia, recognized as the world's largest necropolis site, is located in the Champhai District near Khawbung Village.
The natural heritage site known as Kawtchhuah Ropui, featuring 171 ancient carved stones, is another point of interest.
The department has secured Rs 34.50 crores from the Central government for the Vantawng View Aerial Ropeway Project under SASCI (Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment – Development of Iconic Tourist Centres to Global Scale) Part-I (2024–25). Under the initiative “Our Heritage, Our Treasure” in Vangchhia village, the North Eastern Council (NEC) has allocated funds for preserving and promoting cultural heritage, skill development, and generating income for local residents.
Currently, a Live Museum showcasing traditional Mizo life is being held at Zokhua, Falkawn. Due to its increasing popularity, this program has been extended through March 2026, according to the official.
