New Delhi, April 29 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday was among the first global leaders to extend his congratulations to Mark Carney following his election as the Prime Minister of Canada and the Liberal Party on their electoral success.
"India and Canada share deep-rooted democratic values, a strong dedication to the rule of law, and dynamic people-to-people connections. I eagerly anticipate collaborating with you to enhance our partnership and unlock more opportunities for our citizens," PM Modi stated on X shortly after Carney secured his victory late Monday night, Ottawa time.
The relationship between New Delhi and Ottawa experienced significant strain under Carney's predecessor, Justin Trudeau, who frequently made outrageous remarks against India and expressed support for Khalistani elements while also confronting former US President Donald Trump.
Carney, a prominent economist and former Governor of the Bank of Canada, was selected by the Liberal Party to replace Trudeau. He had committed to "repairing" the strained relationship with India during his campaign.
While positioning himself as the leading candidate to succeed Trudeau, Carney indicated his intent to restore bilateral ties.
"Canada aims to diversify its trade partnerships with like-minded nations, and there are significant opportunities to mend the relationship with India," Carney mentioned during a discussion in Calgary.
Last week, he reiterated Canada's interest in resetting relations with India.
"The Canada-India relationship is incredibly vital on various fronts. Given the current state of the world economy and the global landscape, nations like Canada and India can play a pivotal role in constructing a transparent and collaborative economy, sharing ideas and fostering a strong relationship," he expressed.
Carney, who embarked on his career in finance before transitioning to public service, has previously engaged with India.
As Governor of the Bank of Canada during the 2008 financial crisis, he successfully navigated Canada through one of the most challenging economic periods, safeguarding jobs and ensuring the nation emerged stronger.
In 2013, he was appointed to lead the Bank of England, guiding the UK’s economy through Brexit and the subsequent economic and political turmoil. In 2020, he took on the role of UN Special Envoy for Climate Action and Finance, rallying global efforts to create stronger economies in the fight against climate change.
"Mark brings the proven leadership and actionable plan necessary for implementing change for our party and our country, aiming to build the strongest economy in the G7. We are a proud nation of builders — now is the time to build. Let’s build together," his profile states.
