PM Modi: Netherlands visit elevated ties to Strategic Partnership
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday, 18 May 2025, said his visit to the Netherlands has added fresh momentum to bilateral ties, as the two countries formally elevated their relationship to a Strategic Partnership — a step that unlocks deeper cooperation across defence, water management, semiconductors, and renewable energy. Modi departed Amsterdam for Sweden after concluding a packed two-day schedule that included a royal audience, a dam visit, and a diaspora reception.
Strategic Partnership and the Roadmap
At the heart of the visit was a bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Modi and his Netherlands counterpart Rob Jetten at Jetten's official residence, Catshuis, in The Hague. The two leaders agreed to adopt an ambitious Roadmap for Strategic Partnership covering trade and investment, defence and security, emerging and critical technologies, the maritime sector, renewable energy, and education, according to a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
The leaders also took note of expanding business and innovation partnerships, with the MEA noting that opportunities presented by India's growth trajectory offer promising prospects for Dutch companies.
Water, Agriculture and Health: A Priority Pillar
A centrepiece of the visit was cooperation under the WAH (Water, Agriculture and Health) framework. Modi and Jetten visited the Afsluitdijk Dam — a landmark of Dutch engineering in flood protection and freshwater storage — to underscore the importance of water collaboration.
'An area in which the Netherlands has done pioneering work is water resources. There is a lot the entire global community can learn from them,' Modi said in a post on X after the visit. He added that both sides are working to bring modern Dutch technology to India for irrigation, flood control, and expanding the inland waterway network. The two governments agreed to intensify the Strategic Partnership on Water through large-scale project collaboration.
Cultural Ties and Return of Chola Plates
In a notable cultural development, Prime Minister Modi thanked the Netherlands government for facilitating the return of 11th-century Chola plates — a significant repatriation of Indian heritage artefacts. The two leaders also welcomed a collaboration between Leiden University Library and the Archaeological Survey of India to advance scholarly knowledge of these historic objects.
Royal Audience and Diaspora Reception
Modi met King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima at the Royal Palace Huis ten Bosch in The Hague, where the two sides exchanged views on technology, innovation, sustainable growth, commerce, and water resources. Separately, he addressed an Indian community reception, praising the diaspora as a 'living bridge' of the bilateral partnership.
In a policy announcement welcomed by the diaspora, Modi noted that OCI Card eligibility for the Surinamese Hindustani community has been extended from the fourth generation to the sixth generation. Jetten personally accompanied Modi to the airport to bid farewell as the Prime Minister flew onward to Sweden.
What Comes Next
The Strategic Partnership framework sets the stage for structured engagement across multiple sectors, with the Roadmap expected to guide joint initiatives in the near term. India-Netherlands ties, already anchored by a significant Dutch investment presence in India and strong people-to-people links through the Surinamese Hindustani community, now have a formal high-level architecture to channel cooperation. Whether the ambitious sectoral commitments translate into on-ground projects will be the benchmark against which this visit is ultimately judged.
