Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the long-awaited new terminal at Jodhpur Airport on 4 July, Union Minister for Culture and Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat announced on Friday, 27 June. The terminal, in the works for more than three and a half decades, has now been declared ready for public use, with technical approvals in their final stages.

A 35-Year Wait Nears Its End

Shekhawat, speaking to reporters at Jodhpur Airport after arriving from Delhi, described the facility as more than just a city airport. 'Jodhpur Airport is not just an airport for the city but a key hub for air connectivity across western Rajasthan,' he said. The minister confirmed that an inspection committee was on site and expressed confidence that all required formalities would be completed by Friday evening or, at the latest, by Saturday, ahead of a final scheduled inspection.

Shekhawat noted that surging demand for air travel had placed considerable strain on the existing terminal, making a modern replacement essential. 'People who once could not even imagine travelling by air are now flying,' he remarked, attributing the growth in aviation to India's expanding economy under the current government.

What the New Terminal Promises

The state-of-the-art terminal is designed to deliver a smoother and more convenient travel experience for residents of Jodhpur and the broader western Rajasthan region. Beyond easing aviation congestion, the facility is expected to provide a significant fillip to tourism, trade, and investment in the region — a particularly meaningful prospect for Jodhpur, one of Rajasthan's most visited heritage cities.

The Jodhpur terminal inauguration is one of several major infrastructure events Prime Minister Modi is set to preside over in Rajasthan on 4 July. Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma earlier announced that Modi will also lay the foundation stone for the Jaipur Metro Phase-2 project, to be developed at a cost of ₹13,000 crore, aimed at strengthening the state capital's transport network.

Additionally, the Prime Minister is scheduled to inaugurate the Pachpadra Refinery in Barmer. The refinery's original inauguration, planned for 21 April, was postponed after a fire broke out at the facility on 20 April, forcing a deferral of the visit. The 4 July visit now consolidates all three events into a single high-profile trip.

State-Level Preparations Under Way

Chief Minister Sharma has convened a high-level meeting with senior officials to coordinate arrangements for the Prime Minister's visit. Directives were issued covering the refinery inauguration, the metro foundation-laying, and a separate ceremony to distribute appointment letters to youths selected for government positions. The scale of the preparations signals the political as well as infrastructural significance the state government is attaching to the occasion.

With the 4 July date now confirmed, all eyes will be on whether the technical clearances for the Jodhpur terminal are completed on schedule — and whether the Pachpadra Refinery, after its troubled April deferral, proceeds without incident.
