PM Modi concludes Seychelles State visit, returns to New Delhi
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday, 29 June departed Victoria and emplaned for New Delhi, bringing to a close a landmark three-day State visit to Seychelles — a trip that spanned diplomatic talks, bilateral agreements, a national day address, and India's highest-profile engagement with the island nation in decades.
Farewell and Indian Community Outreach
Before boarding his flight, Modi greeted members of the Indian community who had gathered outside the airport. Supporters carrying Indian flags chanted 'Modi, Modi' and 'Vande Mataram' as the Prime Minister interacted with them. Earlier in the day, he paid floral tributes at the Mahatma Gandhi statue at Peace Park in Seychelles and offered prayers at the Navasakthi Vinayagar Temple, also meeting diaspora members gathered at both locations.
Golden Jubilee Celebrations and Highest State Honour
On Sunday, Modi attended the golden jubilee celebrations of Seychelles National Day as the Guest of Honour, at the invitation of Seychelles President Patrick Herminie. The visit coincided with a dual milestone — 50 years of Seychelles' independence and the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Seychelles.
Modi was conferred the 'Guardian of the Blue Horizon', Seychelles' highest distinction, recognising his leadership in environmental conservation and sustainable development. The award reflects his long-standing advocacy for green growth and sustainable policy frameworks at the global level.
Bilateral Talks and Key Agreements
Modi and President Herminie held wide-ranging discussions at the State House, focusing on trade, digital technology, connectivity, and strategic cooperation. India expressed support for Seychelles across sectors including housing, healthcare, transport, skilling, food security, education, and defence.
The two nations signed several agreements to deepen bilateral ties, including an umbrella line of credit of ₹1,250 crore between the Export-Import Bank of India and the Ministry of Finance, Economic Planning, Trade and Investment of Seychelles, according to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). The agreements also covered trade, digital infrastructure, and agriculture.
Address to the National Assembly
Modi addressed the National Assembly of Seychelles, speaking about the enduring partnership between the two nations built on shared values. He expressed gratitude for the warmth extended by the Seychellois people and interacted with members of the Assembly — a gesture that underscored the depth of people-to-people ties.
Strategic Significance: India's MAHASAGAR Vision
According to the MEA, Seychelles holds a special place in India's Vision 'MAHASAGAR' — Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions — given its position as a key maritime neighbour in the Indian Ocean Region. The visit reinforces India's broader Indo-Pacific strategy and its commitment to deepening ties with island nations that are critical to regional security and blue-economy cooperation. This is the most substantive bilateral engagement between the two countries in recent memory, and it arrives at a moment when Indian Ocean geopolitics is drawing renewed global attention.
