Key Takeaways
Mumbai, January 31 (NationPress) The preparations are underway for the fifth installment of the Mumbai Open WTA 125K Series, with the main draw ceremony taking place at the Maharashtra State Lawn Tennis Association (MSLTA) on Saturday. This event has officially confirmed the first-round matchups for the tournament, scheduled from February 2 to 8.
The main draw ceremony saw the presence of Indian wild card players Shrivalli Bhamidipaty, Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi, and Vaishnavi Adkar, along with India's doubles representative Rutuja Bhosale.
Other attendees included MSLTA secretary Sunder Iyer, joint secretary Nikhil Sampath, and India’s Billie Jean King Cup coach Radhika Tulpule.
As the main draw action kicks off on February 2, Indian players will be in the spotlight, with many local talents facing formidable international competitors.
India's top women's singles player Sahaja Yamalapalli is set to compete against Japan's Eri Shimizu.
Wild card player Shrivalli Bhamidipaty is matched against a qualifier in her opening match, while fellow wild card recipient Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi will go up against Lanlana Tararudee from Thailand.
Additionally, Maharashtra’s leading singles player Vaishnavi Adkar will take on Lilli Tagger from Austria, and another wild card, Vaidehee Chaudhari, will start her campaign against the third seed Leolia Jeanjean of France.
Reflecting on her strategy for the tournament, last year's semi-finalist Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi remarked, “Last year, I entered the tournament with no expectations and it worked out well. I plan to adopt the same mindset this year. Being young, I am focused on my development physically and mentally, aiming to improve daily, maintain fitness, avoid injuries, and give my best.”
Emphasizing the significance of this tournament in the Indian tennis landscape, MSLTA secretary Sunder Iyer stated, “Conducting this tournament at this juncture is crucial as it aids in identifying players for future international competitions. This year is particularly vital with the upcoming Asian Games, where the Indian team will be selected. The ranking points accrued here are retained by the players for the entire year, which is why February was chosen. The climate in Mumbai is outstanding during this period, and I express gratitude to the MSLTA management for allowing us to utilize this remarkable facility, which has been transformed into a stadium. On behalf of MSLTA, I extend a warm welcome to everyone.”
