What Did Manoj Muntashir Say About India's Film Superstars and A.R. Rahman's Comments?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, Jan 21 (NationPress) – In an exclusive interview with IANS, lyricist and poet Manoj Muntashir has expressed strong disagreement with A.R. Rahman’s recent remarks concerning communalism, highlighting the prominence of Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, and Aamir Khan as the leading superstars of India to counter Rahman's assertions of bias within the film industry.
In his discussion with IANS, Manoj stated, “This is a nation whose top superstars include Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, and Aamir Khan. Great writers and poets such as Javed Akhtar, Sahir Ludhianvi, and Majrooh Sultanpuri also hail from here. Furthermore, this is a country that had Mohammad Azharuddin as its cricket team captain. I firmly believe there exists no discrimination in our industry.”
He elaborated, “If you read the opening and closing credits of any Hindi film, you will come across a substantial list of names, often around 250. A closer inspection reveals a distinct pattern. I challenge anyone to randomly select a film and demonstrate where one religion has received preferential treatment over others. Such instances do not exist.”
He continued, “We hold A.R. Rahman in high regard and take pride in his contribution to our nation. However, it is within our rights to disagree respectfully, and I entirely oppose the claims being made, especially the notion that something has shifted in the last eight years. I find it perplexing that this timeframe is being emphasized.”
The lyricist further stated, “In the past eight years, films like Pathaan and Jawan have shattered all box office records. This country has a tremendous spirit and heart. It does not judge its artists but embraces them. If you produce quality work, people celebrate you. At times, they may express discontent, but that is rooted in affection.”
“This is the bond between our nation and its artists. I utterly reject the idea of any form of discrimination. This inclusivity defines our identity,” he concluded.
For those unaware, A.R. Rahman has been in the news since he claimed that his work in the Hindi film industry has diminished over the last eight years, attributing it to a “power shift” and “communal” politics within the entertainment sector.
Following significant backlash over his “communal” comments, Rahman issued a video apology on his social media accounts, clarifying that he did not intend to offend anyone and expressed regret if his statements caused any distress.
