Yangon, Sep 23 (NationPress) The Myanmar Rice Federation (MRF) has established an ambitious goal to export 300,000 tonnes of rice and broken rice monthly during the latter half of the 2025-2026 fiscal year, as announced by the federation on Tuesday.
In the initial half of the fiscal year, spanning from April to September, Myanmar managed to export approximately 200,000 tonnes per month, culminating in a total of around 1.2 million tonnes. For the upcoming second half, from October 2025 to March 2026, the objective is to ramp up exports to around 300,000 tonnes monthly, according to U Ye Min Aung, chairman of the MRF, in an interview with Xinhua news agency.
He underscored that the federation remains committed to fostering export-led growth to ensure the holistic development of Myanmar's rice industry. This initiative is in complete harmony with national directives and government policies that support export activities, he added.
Currently, Myanmar's primary export destinations include Europe, China, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries, notably the Philippines and Indonesia, as well as Africa.
The latter half of the fiscal year aligns with the monsoon crop harvest and closely follows the summer crop harvest, he noted.
During this period, market inventory levels are significantly elevated, exerting downward pressure on prices. Moreover, international rice prices are relatively low.
To protect the livelihoods of farmers and other stakeholders, it is crucial to vigorously promote rice exports during this price-sensitive period, he stated.
In addition, Myanmar aims to cultivate up to 100,000 acres of coffee crops nationwide over the next one to two years, according to an official from the Department of Agriculture.
This initiative seeks to enhance the production of agricultural goods for export and ensure profitability for farmers, as reported by the state-owned daily Myanma Alinn.
Thus far, around 63,226 acres of coffee crops have already been planted across the nation, the report indicated.
Currently, two varieties of coffee are being cultivated in Myanmar: Arabica and Robusta.
The target regions for expanding coffee cultivation to achieve 100,000 acres include Nay Pyi Taw, Mandalay, Bago, Ayeyarwady, Mon, Tanintharyi, Sagaing, and Magway.
To facilitate reaching this goal, the Department of Agriculture will provide coffee seeds, seedlings, and technical assistance, the report stated.
