New Delhi, Dec 28 (NationPress) The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has mandated officials to carry out a new inspection and submit a comprehensive report regarding the purported encroachment of approximately six hectares of forest land situated between Press Enclave and Saket Sports Complex in south Delhi.
A panel led by Chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava noted that the previously submitted reports did not adequately reveal the condition of the claimed forest land.
"The submitted report fails to clarify the status of the contested forest land between Press Enclave and Saket Sports Complex," the NGT stated, allowing four weeks for a new inspection to be conducted.
The panel, which included Expert Member Dr A. Senthil Vel, addressed a suo motu case initiated following a news report that indicated the establishment of around 500 'jhuggis' in the Saket forest area, leading to the encroachment of nearly six hectares of land. In its most recent ruling, the Green Tribunal pointed out that civic authorities could not verify whether the previously filed report pertained to the specific six-hectare area in question.
The NGT emphasized that respondents failed to specify whether the report related to the six-hectare area between Press Enclave and Saket Sports Complex constituted forest land and ordered that the new report must incorporate "complete details of khasra numbers inspected".
The case has been scheduled for further deliberation on March 16, 2026. Previously, in September of this year, the Green Tribunal acknowledged a report submitted by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA), which indicated that the disputed land had been transferred to it as part of a "package deal" under a 1979 notification issued under the Delhi Development Act.
The DDA also revealed that unauthorized structures existed on the site, encompassing a kabristan, temporary shelters, occupation by kabariwalas, and "a few jhuggis".
Moreover, the DDA informed the NGT about ongoing litigation concerning the area before the Saket District Court and the Delhi High Court, including a case where a demolition stay was granted in 2015. The Justice Shrivastava-led panel then instructed the DDA to provide the latest updates on those proceedings.
