New Delhi, March 25 (NationPress) The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken notice of a media report detailing the assault of a Class-XI student from the Scheduled Caste by upper caste individuals on a bus in Tamil Nadu.
The Commission has demanded a report from the state government and police within four weeks.
This incident occurred in Thoothukudi district, where the student was forcibly removed from the bus and attacked with a sickle, resulting in the severing of his fingers.
As per a media report published on March 12, the victim's father, who attempted to intervene, was also assaulted. The incident happened while the student was on his way to take an exam.
The Commission noted that if the report is accurate, it highlights a severe violation of the victim's human rights.
Accordingly, notices were sent to the Director General of Police and the District Collector of Thoothukudi, requesting a detailed report within four weeks.
The media also noted that the assailants fled the scene, and the boy was taken to a hospital, later being admitted to the Tirunelveli Government Hospital.
After a lengthy seven-hour surgery, doctors successfully reattached the boy's fingers.
Additionally, the rights panel responded to another media report regarding the murder of a retired Sub-Inspector of Police in broad daylight in the Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu by a group of four individuals.
Following this, the NHRC has called for a report from the Director General of Police and the District Collector of Tirunelveli within four weeks, citing the human rights implications for the victim.
The deceased was reportedly an activist involved in legal disputes against the encroachment of Waqf land in the region and had been receiving threats. Allegations have surfaced that the police failed to take adequate action, allegedly colluding with the perpetrators.
According to a March 19, 2025 media report, the family of the victim claimed that police negligence contributed significantly to his murder.
