Seoul, Aug. 2 (NationPress) North Korea vehemently criticized the recent military exercises conducted by the United States alongside South Korean and Japanese forces, alleging that these maneuvers serve as preparations for "preemptive strikes" against the North.
The Rodong Sinmun, the primary newspaper of North Korea, articulated this claim in a recent article, addressing the US-led air drills that commenced last month in proximity to Japan, as well as recent logistical operations involving South Korean and US Marines.
According to the article, "These exercises are intended for executing preemptive strikes against our Republic," stating that to maintain peace on the Korean Peninsula and in the surrounding region, the unrestrained military actions by the United States, Japan, and South Korea must cease.
The article further condemned the ongoing trilateral military alignment among South Korea, the United States, and Japan, alleging that it is designed to collectively suppress the North through military force, as reported by Yonhap news agency.
It asserted that it is both "just and necessary" for North Korea to enhance its defensive capabilities in response to such provocations.
Recently, South Korea has been making strides to fortify its three-way security partnership with the United States and Japan, particularly in light of the escalating nuclear and missile threats posed by North Korea.
On Friday, North Korea condemned the US and Japan for transforming their alliance into a threatening "nuclear" coalition, contending that this shift validates its own defense expansion.
The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported this critique in an article by a North Korean international relations analyst, referencing last year’s elevation of US-Japan discussions on extended deterrence to the ministerial level and the recent reaffirmation of extended deterrence protocols by the two nations.
Extended deterrence signifies the US commitment to utilizing its full military capabilities, including nuclear weapons, to protect its allies.
North Korea also highlighted recent visits by Japanese officials to a base housing US B-52 strategic bombers and the execution of a joint military exercise simulating nuclear deployment.
It claimed that the US is escalating regional tensions to a "perilous touch-and-go" state by placing nuclear strategic assets at naval and air facilities in Hawaii, Guam, and Japan, while conducting joint military exercises with its "junior allies."
