Northeast floods 2025: Scindia reviews crisis, Chouhan & Rijiju visit Arunachal
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region Jyotiraditya M. Scindia on Tuesday, 30 June conducted a comprehensive review of the flood situation across the Northeast following days of incessant rainfall, assuring affected states of the Centre's full support. Separately, Union Ministers Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Kiren Rijiju undertook a ground-level assessment of flood-hit areas in Arunachal Pradesh.
Scindia's High-Level Review
Scindia held direct conversations with the Chief Ministers of four flood-affected states — Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu, Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, and Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh. According to an official statement, the DoNER Minister took stock of ground conditions and pledged every possible support from the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER) to protect lives, bolster relief operations, and restore normalcy at the earliest.
The MDoNER said it is in constant coordination with state governments and central agencies to facilitate timely assistance. This comes amid what officials describe as one of the most widespread monsoon flood events to hit the region in recent years.
Scale of Devastation Across the Region
Assam remains among the worst-affected states, with flooding reported across six districts. Arunachal Pradesh has witnessed flood-related devastation in 12 of its 28 districts following continuous heavy rainfall. Sikkim and Manipur are also experiencing adverse weather conditions, while Meghalaya remains on alert. Mizoram, Nagaland, and Tripura are being closely monitored in view of the prevailing weather across the region.
Ground Visit to Keyi Panyor District
Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu, accompanied by Union Ministers Chouhan and Rijiju, visited the flood-ravaged areas of Hoj and Potin in Keyi Panyor district, where three people have lost their lives and two others remain missing. The team interacted with affected families, reviewed the extent of damage on the ground, and assessed immediate requirements of impacted communities.
Posting on social media platform X, Khandu wrote: 'To strengthen relief, rehabilitation and post-flood restoration efforts, visited the flood-affected areas of Hoj and Potin in Keyi Panyor district along with Hon'ble Union Ministers Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan Ji and Shri Kiren Rijiju Ji.' He described the joint visit as a reflection of the Government of India's continued support to Arunachal Pradesh during this challenging period.
'We interacted with affected families, reviewed the situation on the ground and assessed the extent of the damage. Our immediate priority is to ensure swift relief for every affected family, restore essential services and expedite the rehabilitation and reconstruction of areas impacted by the floods,' Khandu said. The Chief Minister also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his prompt response in deputing the two Union Ministers to personally assess the situation.
Assam's Response and Sarma's Acknowledgement
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma thanked Scindia for reaching out. In a post on X, Sarma said: 'Thank you for your call, Hon'ble Union Minister Shri Jyotiraditya M. Scindia Ji. The recent spell of floods has caused widespread damage in Upper Assam. Our teams are on the ground to review the situation and provide all necessary relief and rehabilitation support.' He added that under Prime Minister Modi's leadership, the state and central governments remain committed to the welfare of the people.
Home Minister Shah Also Steps In
Union Home Minister Amit Shah had separately spoken to the Chief Ministers of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh on Monday to review the flood situation in both states and assured them of all possible assistance from the Centre. The multi-ministerial mobilisation signals the severity with which the Centre is treating this year's Northeast flood crisis.
With the monsoon season still in its early weeks, authorities are bracing for further rainfall across the region. Rescue, relief, and restoration operations are ongoing across multiple states.
