Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 28 (NationPress) Union Minister for Communication and Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), Jyotiraditya Scindia, stated on Saturday that the Northeast serves as India's gateway to the Global South, with significant potential as a vital link for both economic and cultural interactions.
While addressing the 15th edition of NEtym 2026 — the annual cultural festival organized by the Northeast Cell at Hindu College, University of Delhi, the Union Minister emphasized the rising importance of the region in India's overall developmental journey.
He referred to Northeast India as the 'Ashtalakshmi' of India and praised the festival for providing a platform that highlights the cultural richness, talent, and vibrancy of the region.
During his two-year tenure as DoNER Minister, Scindia noted that he has gained a deeper insight into the region's capabilities, asserting that it can act as a crucial link between India, Southeast Asia, and the broader international community.
At the event, he acknowledged the strong human resources of the region, highlighting a literacy rate of approximately 93%, and underscored the essential role of youth in fostering growth across various sectors.
Reflecting on his personal connection to the Northeast, Jyotiraditya Scindia mentioned his visits to all eight states in the region, commending its rich cultural heritage and artistic traditions that are both deeply rooted and expressive.
He also honored distinguished cultural figures like Bhupen Hazarika and Zubeen Garg.
Highlighting government initiatives, Scindia outlined programs aimed at empowering young people and increasing opportunities within the region.
One significant initiative is the 'Northeast SPARKS' program, which, in collaboration with ISRO, offers exposure to space science and advanced technologies to 800 students from the Northeast every year.
The 'Ashtalakshmi Darshan' program encourages cultural exchanges between students from the Northeast and other regions of the country, with over 1,200 students already participating, and plans for substantial expansion in the future.
Additionally, he announced that the 'Advancing NER' portal, set to launch in April 2026, will function as a comprehensive digital platform providing job opportunities, career guidance, entrance exam information, and access to educational resources.
Union Minister Scindia remarked that under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, development initiatives in the Northeast have transitioned from mere intentions to concrete actions, focusing on accessibility, inclusivity, and opportunities.
He encouraged the youth to take an active role in shaping the future of the region, asserting that the political conversation should evolve to reflect what the Northeast is becoming and its contributions towards creating a 'Viksit Bharat'.
