Key Takeaways
Bhubaneswar, March 22 (NationPress) Odisha's Health Minister Mukesh Mahaling has called for stringent adherence to fire safety protocols in hospitals throughout the state. He instructed health department officials to implement regular monitoring.
During a high-level assessment meeting at Lok Seva Bhawan, Mahaling emphasized the importance of enforcing fire safety guidelines in government hospitals and mandated routine inspections.
The meeting evaluated fire safety measures in various medical institutions, including medical colleges, district headquarters hospitals, and other healthcare facilities across Odisha.
Furthermore, Minister Mahaling urged officials to focus on consistent monitoring to ensure fire safety standards are met.
As per a formal announcement, the Odisha Health Minister highlighted the necessity of a swift response during emergencies and prioritizing patient safety.
He directed that all fire-fighting equipment in hospitals must remain operational and that routine inspections and mock drills should be executed.
Additionally, the Minister instructed officials to collaborate with the Works Department and the Fire Services Department to take essential actions. Various other critical issues concerning the state health sector were also addressed during this meeting.
“Ensuring the safety of patients and the general public is our highest priority, and negligence in this matter will not be tolerated,” stated Mahaling.
The Health Minister urged health department officials to stay vigilant to avert such risks in hospitals statewide.
Notably, this directive follows a tragic fire incident at the government-run SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, which resulted in the loss of 12 lives. This has led the Opposition parties, including the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and Congress, to demand the resignation of Minister Mahaling on moral grounds.
Opposition leaders have also claimed that this incident reveals significant flaws within the operations of the state health department.
