Kolkata, Oct 11 (NationPress) A second-year student from Odisha was reportedly gang-raped outside a private medical college located in West Burdwan district's Durgapur on Friday night, as confirmed by police on Saturday.
A case has been filed against multiple individuals regarding the incident, but no arrests have been executed yet.
According to police reports, the student, who hails from Jaleswar in Odisha, had departed the college premises with a classmate to have dinner.
"It has been alleged that assailants began to harass them during this time. They also pursued their friend, who fled in fear. Once the girl was left alone, the assailants dragged her into a nearby forest where the crime occurred," a senior official from the Asansol-Durgapur Police Commissionerate stated.
The college administration has already lodged a complaint with the authorities.
Family sources indicated that the student left the college at approximately 8:30 p.m. on Friday for a meal. During this time, a group of young men obstructed her path. Subsequently, she was reportedly taken to a forest behind the private medical college campus and gang-raped.
Following the assault, it is alleged that the assailants also took the student’s mobile phone. She is currently receiving treatment in a hospital.
Her family expressed their concern, stating that they do not wish for her to continue her education under these circumstances.
"My daughter is not safe here. I will not allow her to pursue her education any longer. I will take her home," her parents declared to the media.
While officers from the New Township Police Station in Durgapur have initiated an investigation, the identities of the suspects remain unknown.
Local BJP leaders have already protested the incident, claiming that there is an effort to suppress various details related to the RG Kar rape and murder case of a junior doctor. They demanded that no cover-up occurs in this case.
Archana Majumdar, a member of the National Commission for Women (NCW), voiced her outrage regarding the incident. Referring to the RG Kar case, she stated, “The rise in incidents of sexual assault and rape is alarming, as perpetrators are not being apprehended and punished swiftly. We have not witnessed any rapist or murderer facing the ultimate punishment in West Bengal. No one has been executed. Despite ongoing protests, justice is delayed, and the culprits remain unpunished, possibly due to some unseen influence.”
On August 9 of the previous year, the body of a postgraduate trainee was discovered in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
This incident rocked the nation, igniting widespread and sustained protests from doctors, citizens, and women from various backgrounds. Although the sole convict, Sanjoy Roy, has already been sentenced to life imprisonment by a trial court, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has yet to complete its investigation into the “larger conspiracy” behind the crime, even after a year.
