Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Akola (Maharashtra), April 2 (NationPress) A police official stationed at the Civil Lines police station in Akola, Maharashtra, faces serious allegations of soliciting sexual favours from a woman during her time in police custody, sparking widespread outrage and immediate internal action.
The woman had been detained by the cybercrime unit for reportedly defrauding an individual of Rs 80 lakh under the guise of offering employment. After her court hearing, she was placed in four days of police custody and subsequently housed at the Civil Lines police station in Akola city.
While in custody, the woman claimed that an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) made inappropriate demands for sexual relations. She promptly informed a female colleague officer, who escalated the matter to higher authorities. Upon receiving the complaint, a senior officer swiftly visited the station and reprimanded the implicated ASI.
Following these developments, the woman lodged a formal complaint against the officer. The Civil Lines police initiated an investigation based on her allegations. The situation incited concern and demonstrations at various levels due to the gravity of the accusations.
The police department responded by suspending the accused officer and launching a search operation, culminating in the ASI's arrest by the local crime branch later that evening.
In a related incident on March 21, a police Constable in Aligarh was suspended and charged for allegedly making inappropriate advances toward a 25-year-old rape survivor. Reports indicate that Constable Imran Khan, assigned to the Quarsi police station, told the survivor that her complaint would only be addressed if she met him privately and engaged in sexual acts.
The survivor recorded phone conversations in which the Constable purportedly made explicit propositions and assurances of legal support in exchange for sexual favours. She subsequently brought this evidence to the attention of senior police officials.
In response to her allegations, Senior Superintendent of Police Neeraj Kumar Jadaun ordered the Constable's suspension and mandated that an FIR be filed against him.
