Kolkata, Jan 14 (NationPress) A Sub-Inspector with the West Bengal Police stationed in the Jalpaiguri district was taken into custody on Tuesday, facing serious allegations of raping a young woman earlier this month, according to officials. The officer has been named as Subrata Gun, who served as the second officer at the Rajganj police station in Jalpaiguri.
The accused was brought before a district court in Jalpaiguri on Thursday evening and subsequently remanded to police custody.
He has been charged under Section 351 (2) (punishment for criminal intimidation) and Section 64 (2) (punishment for rape as per the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita).
Despite the allegations, the officer has maintained his innocence.
Last Friday, the victim, who resides in Siliguri of the neighboring Darjeeling district, lodged a complaint at the Women Police Station under the Siliguri City Police, accusing Gun of assaulting her at his residence in Rajganj.
The woman claimed that the accused summoned her to his official quarters opposite the Rajganj police station on the night of January 9, under the pretext of an investigation, where he then sexually assaulted her.
Following her complaint, the Women Police Station registered a Zero FIR and transferred it to the Women Police Station in Jalpaiguri, which oversees the Rajganj police station.
The Jalpaiguri police initiated a preliminary investigation, and the officer was relieved of his duties on January 12. Eventually, he was arrested on Tuesday and presented before the district court. The victim's counsel, Sandip Mondal, remarked that the scenario of a police officer raping a woman under the guise of an investigation is utterly unimaginable.
In a related note, Jalpaiguri police sources indicated that an investigation is also underway regarding the young woman in connection with a specific case.
