Why Did Omar Abdullah Call Sonam Wangchuk's Arrest Unfortunate?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Srinagar, Sep 26 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah, expressed that the detention of Ladakhi climate activist Sonam Wangchuk is regrettable, attributing the responsibility to the Union government for failing to uphold its commitments.
Initially unaware of the circumstances surrounding Wangchuk's arrest, Abdullah later conveyed to the media that the situation is indeed unfortunate.
He accused the Central government of consistently reneging on pledges made to the people of Ladakh.
“I cannot comprehend why the Central government retracts its promises to the people of Ladakh, similar to the commitments made to us in Jammu and Kashmir,” stated Abdullah during a press briefing. He recalled a visit from a Union Minister to the region prior to the recent Hill Council elections in Leh, a time when locals had declared an election boycott.
“That Union Minister made various promises which led to community participation in the elections, resulting in a BJP victory. Those commitments remain unfulfilled,” he added.
When questioned about accusations that he condoned violence in Leh, Abdullah dismissed the claims and criticized the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Jammu and Kashmir assembly, Sunil Sharma, for making habitual excuses.
“I have never condoned violence, nor am I the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh. The LoP should cease making excuses. What wrong have the people of Jammu and Kashmir committed? Just because he is the LoP and not the Chief Minister, the Central government refuses to restore statehood?” Abdullah questioned.
Farooq Abdullah, President of the National Conference (NC) and former Chief Minister, indicated during a press conference that the unrest in Leh stems not from external forces, but from unfulfilled commitments.
He cautioned the Union government about the potential repercussions of ongoing tensions in the sensitive border area of Ladakh, especially with China looming nearby.
As of Friday, a curfew remains in effect in Leh for the third consecutive day, with additional restrictions imposed in Kargil since Thursday.
Officials have reported a peaceful situation, but no decision has yet been made regarding the easing of the curfew to facilitate a return to normalcy in the region.
