Are Opposition Parties Targeting BJP Over Border Issues and Unemployment?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 9 (NationPress) On Monday, opposition factions launched a fierce critique against the BJP-led central government, accusing it of sidestepping essential parliamentary discussions on significant national matters such as border infrastructure, inflation, and unemployment, while stirring ideological debates for political leverage.
In a statement following an Opposition meeting, Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav remarked on the escalating internal discord within the BJP, claiming that the government is intentionally hindering Parliament's operations. “The BJP is perpetuating falsehoods. The government is not interested in allowing Parliament to function,” he asserted.
Addressing the situation at the China border, Yadav challenged the government's performance on territorial integrity and infrastructure since 2014. “What has been India's territorial status from 2014 to 2026? This border is highly sensitive. If the Opposition raises a concern, the government should at least listen and take action,” he voiced.
He pointed out the inadequate road infrastructure along the Line of Actual Control, stating that the Samajwadi Party proposed a six-lane highway from Gwalior to the Lipulekh region to bolster military logistics. “The six-lane proposal was dismissed. Even the later commitment for a four-lane road was unmet, and only a double-lane road with paved shoulders is currently in progress,” he noted, urging the government to compare India’s border infrastructure with that of China.
Yadav also criticized the soaring costs and delays in significant infrastructure undertakings, including the bullet train project. “The budget has escalated from ₹1 lakh crore to ₹2 lakh crore. Prime Ministers hail from Uttar Pradesh, yet there is no timeline for when a bullet train will operate in the state. Gorakhpur still lacks a finished Metro, and boats are necessary during monsoon,” he remarked.
Regarding RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat’s suggestion to award the Bharat Ratna to Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, Yadav accused the government of trying to distract from pressing issues. “We seek to debate ‘18 equals zero’ (referring to the India–US trade deal), but you prefer to discuss other topics,” he cautioned against rehashing historical controversies.
In alignment with these sentiments, Azad Samaj Party head and Lok Sabha MP Chandra Shekhar Aazad stated that while freedom of expression permits various opinions, the BJP administration operates under RSS influence. He alleged that many decisions are made following the organization's directives.
Aazad further criticized the government for neglecting the demands to recognize social reformers and freedom fighters representing marginalized communities. “We have proposed the Bharat Ratna for Kanshi Ram and 1857 revolution hero Kotwal Dhan Singh Gurjar. The government remains silent on these contributions,” he stated.
Highlighting governance challenges, Aazad pointed out the serious issues surrounding inflation, employment, housing, law and order, and pollution, especially in Delhi and other large cities. “Instead of tackling these pressing matters, the government is preoccupied with issues that provide it political advantages,” he claimed.
