New Delhi, Aug 1 (NationPress) A group of Opposition Members of Parliament has collectively addressed a letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, requesting a dedicated discussion in the House regarding the ongoing voter list revision process in Bihar and several other states.
In their correspondence, the MPs conveyed their serious concern about the timing and motives behind the revision, particularly with the Bihar Assembly elections approaching.
“As Members of Parliament from various Opposition parties, we wish to voice our significant apprehension regarding the ongoing voter list revision in Bihar, especially with the elections looming. This unprecedented move raises alarming questions,” the letter expressed.
The MPs also highlighted that the Election Commission of India has suggested that similar revisions might soon occur in additional regions across the nation.
“Considering the widespread concerns about transparency, timing, and the overarching intent of this process, we believe this issue requires the urgent attention of the House,” they added.
Emphasizing that the Opposition has persistently raised this concern since the session's commencement, the MPs noted that this issue was also discussed during the All-Party Meeting on July 20. While the government has shown a willingness to discuss various issues, including the voter list revision, no specific timeline for this debate has been established, they mentioned.
The MPs emphasized that any modification of the electoral rolls directly impacts the fundamental right to vote and, consequently, the integrity of free and fair elections in the country.
“A special discussion in the Lok Sabha would provide members the chance to seek clarity, express valid concerns, and advocate for enhanced transparency and accountability in this process,” the letter stated.
Calling for prompt action, the MPs concluded: “We therefore urge you to arrange a special discussion on the ongoing voter roll revision without any further delay.”
The signatories of the letter include Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, Lalji Verma, Supriya Sule, Abhay Kumar Sinha, among others.
