What is the Significance of CM Stalin's Opposition as SIR Launches Today Across TN?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, Nov 4 (NationPress) The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list officially commences today, November 4, throughout Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, as part of the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) initiative to ensure that only legitimate and qualified voters are retained on the electoral rolls.
Officials indicate that this revision process aims to eliminate the names of deceased individuals, those who have altered their addresses, and voters listed in multiple constituencies.
The Commission’s objective is to eradicate duplication and inaccuracies, thus establishing a clear and updated electoral roll.
This enumeration effort will continue until December 4, during which government staff, alongside political party booth agents, will carry out house-to-house verification.
The exercise will utilize the final voter lists from 2002 and 2005, which are accessible to polling station officials.
Chief Electoral Officer Archana Patnaik stated that polling officials will visit only those residences that appeared in the 2002 and 2005 lists.
“Officials will confirm the details of current voters and distribute voter registration forms. Individuals aged 18 and above can complete the necessary forms and affidavits for submission during future visits,” she remarked.
Each polling officer will visit each household up to three times to finalize the verification. Those previously listed under their parents or grandparents are required to notify officials for accurate inclusion in the draft voter list.
The draft electoral roll is scheduled for release on December 9, followed by the final list publication on February 7, 2026.
Voters who have changed their address or reached the age of 18 can submit the required documents between December 7 and January 3 to guarantee their inclusion in the final rolls.
However, during a meeting led by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, numerous political parties opposed the timing of the SIR, contending it could lead to voter confusion. They have resolved to approach the Supreme Court to request a postponement of the exercise.
With the process launching today, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are undertaking one of the most comprehensive voter verification initiatives in recent years, aimed at purging and reinforcing the democratic rolls.
