Is Tamil Nadu Approaching 100% Voter Coverage as SIR Submission Deadline Closes Today?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, Dec 11 (NationPress) The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced that Tamil Nadu is on the verge of achieving nearly complete coverage in the current voter list revision initiative, as the final day for submitting Special Intensive Revision (SIR) voter correction forms arrives this Thursday.
Despite the extensive electorate in the state, only about 4,000 voters have yet to receive their SIR forms.
The SIR procedure is being implemented across nine states, including Tamil Nadu, Kerala, West Bengal, and Assam, along with three Union Territories such as Puducherry. Initially set to conclude on December 4, the deadline was extended by an additional week to ensure maximum participation.
As the extended deadline wraps up on Thursday, the ECI has reported that 99.98% of forms have been disseminated across 12 states, with 99.59% of completed forms already uploaded online.
With a voter base of 6.41 crores, Tamil Nadu has demonstrated remarkable progress. The Commission noted that 99.99% of forms have been distributed, indicating that only 4,201 voters have yet to receive theirs. Additionally, 99.95% of the distributed forms have been digitized, and only 26,967 voters have not returned their completed forms.
Voters who have already submitted their SIR forms can verify if their details have been uploaded by visiting the SIR-2026 section of the ECI website and entering either their mobile number or voter ID.
The draft electoral roll is scheduled for publication on December 16.
Individuals looking to make corrections, deletions, or new registrations have until January 15 of the following year to submit their applications. Those turning 18 by January 1 must submit Form 6, overseas citizens should use Form 6A, objections or deletion requests can be made using Form 7, and voters seeking to change their address must submit Form 8.
Upon processing all applications, the final voter list will be released on February 14. However, as some states have yet to finalize their SIR-related tasks, officials hinted that additional time may be granted. A formal decision is anticipated following the Election Commission's review meeting in New Delhi later today.
In the meantime, Tamil Nadu has also completed a significant reorganization of polling stations to maintain the standard of one booth for every 1,200 voters. As part of this restructuring, 6,648 new booths have been established, and 80 booths have been merged, bringing the total number of polling stations in the state to 75,035.
