Chennai, Jan 18 (NationPress) This Sunday represents the final chance for qualified residents in Tamil Nadu to request their addition to the electoral roll or to make amendments, as the Election Commission of India (ECI) concludes the current phase of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR).

The ECI has stated that requests for adding new voters, removing names, or altering address and personal information will not be accepted after this Sunday.

This ongoing revision initiative is focused on guaranteeing that the state's voter list remains accurate, updated, and devoid of ineligible entries before the upcoming elections.

As part of this thorough revision process, the draft electoral roll was issued on January 19. During the verification phase, approximately 9.7 million voters' names were eliminated from the draft list.

Officials clarified that these removals largely comprised names of deceased voters, individuals who had moved, and duplicate or otherwise ineligible entries identified through field-level assessments.

After the draft roll was published, the Election Commission initiated a period for claims and objections. Citizens whose names were absent from the list, as well as those wishing to make corrections or deletions, were permitted to file their requests until today.

To promote broader access and participation, special voter registration camps were held across Tamil Nadu on Saturday and Sunday, enabling individuals to complete the necessary processes at nearby polling stations and designated centers.

Election officials indicated that the response to the revision campaign has been significant. To date, around 1.28 million applications have been submitted for inclusion in the voter list. These applications will undergo review by electoral registration officers before the final roll is prepared.

The Commission has warned that voters who do not submit their applications by Sunday will have to wait for the next revision cycle, emphasizing the need for timely action.

Residents are encouraged to verify their information using official channels and ensure that all necessary corrections are submitted before the deadline.

The final electoral roll will be published on February 17, which will then be utilized for all electoral activities. Officials stated that this revision exercise is a vital step in enhancing the democratic process by ensuring both accuracy and inclusivity in the voters' list.
