Tamil Nadu Releases Final Electoral Roll; Voter Count Declines to 5.43 Crore
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, February 23 (NationPress) The final electoral roll for Tamil Nadu has been officially unveiled on Monday, following a thorough Special Intensive Revision (SIR) conducted under the directives of the Election Commission of India and the Supreme Court.
This revision is a significant precursor to the upcoming Assembly elections, resulting in considerable alterations to the state's voter registry, including extensive deletions and modifications.
District Election Officers, who also serve as District Collectors, have commenced the dissemination of district-level statistics across the state.
Tamil Nadu's Chief Electoral Officer, Archana Patnaik, is set to hold a press conference in Chennai to formally announce the revised electorate figures and outline the main findings from the revision.
This comprehensive initiative has led to the removal of 9,737,831 names from the draft electoral roll following the evaluation of Special Summary Correction Enumeration Forms.
As a result of these deletions, the total electorate in Tamil Nadu now reaches 5.43 crore.
Election officials noted that a significant number of deletions pertained to deceased individuals. Out of the 6.6 million names expunged for various reasons, eligible individuals were provided the chance to reapply using Form 6. This provision allowed qualified voters, including those newly eligible, to request inclusion in the updated electoral list.
Additionally, notifications were sent to 1,243,363 individuals whose entries were missing essential information or contained discrepancies. They were required to submit supporting documentation and self-declaration certificates within a specific timeframe to maintain their names on the roll.
The revision process adhered to a directive issued by the Election Commission on January 30, following a Supreme Court order, which mandated that names removed due to conflicting or inconsistent information be publicly displayed with explanations for their removal.
These lists were made available at gram panchayat offices, community locations, block and sub-division offices, as well as in urban ward offices.
Affected individuals had a 10-day period to lodge objections or provide clarifications.
Simultaneously, nearly 8% of voters were removed across nine states and union territories during the second phase of the SIR.
Puducherry's final electoral roll, published on February 14, showed a total electorate of 944,211.
The updated electoral roll is anticipated to enhance transparency, accuracy, and credibility in Tamil Nadu’s electoral process as the state gears up for the upcoming democratic elections.
