Dhaka, April 26 (NationPress) More than 50 individuals sustained injuries as the supporters of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Awami League clashed violently in Naogaon village, located in Habiganj.
As reported by local media, among those injured, five individuals were in critical condition and are currently receiving treatment at Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital.
The tensions between the supporters of BNP's Akhtar Mia and Awami League's Shahjahan Mia had been escalating for an extended period over control of the region, according to a report from the Bangladeshi news outlet UNB.
According to locals, the supporters of both factions reportedly engaged in a violent altercation on Friday, brandishing locally made weapons, which persisted for approximately two hours, resulting in over 50 injuries.
ABM Maidul Hasan, the officer-in-charge (OC) of Ajmiriganj Police Station, confirmed the incident, stating that police were dispatched to the scene and successfully regained control of the situation.
"Additional forces have been deployed in the area to avert further disturbances," the police official added.
Reports indicate multiple instances of violent confrontations between supporters of the two parties in various regions of Bangladesh following the removal of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from her position.
Last month, two individuals lost their lives and ten others were injured in a clash between BNP and Awami League activists competing for dominance in a distant char within Raipura upazila of Narsingdi.
In a similar conflict in February, at least 30 homes were vandalized due to clashes between BNP and Awami League supporters in Kanaipur Union of Faridpur Sadar Upazila as they fought for area control, as reported by the prominent Bangladeshi daily, Prothom Alo.
Furthermore, Awami League activists and supporters have faced political repression under the interim government headed by Muhammad Yunus.
Local media have reported that recently, over 55 members of the Awami League were arrested for conducting processions in support of Hasina in the streets of Dhaka and other parts of the country.
Numerous Awami League leaders have been brutally attacked and killed following Hasina's ouster.
A report by The Dhaka Tribune noted that in August 2024, the bodies of at least 20 leaders of the Awami League and their family members were discovered across the nation.
Many leaders and supporters of the Awami League have endured severe assaults and mob violence under the interim government led by Yunus.
