Dhaka, March 31 (NationPress) The father of Bangladesh's Information and Broadcast Advisor Mahfuj Alam has reportedly been attacked in his village located in Ramganj upazila of Lakshmipur during a violent clash among factions of the Pro-Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), according to local media reports.
Family members claim that the assault was led by Shukkur Ali, a former leader of the BNP’s student wing, Chhatra Dal, who is also a potential candidate for president of the Swechchha Sebak Dal union unit. The victim, Azizur Rahman Bacchu, holds the position of organizing secretary for the BNP unit in Ichhapur Union.
Azizur Rahman suffered injuries to his hands after being struck with bricks and was subsequently hospitalized. One of his relatives was also hurt during the altercation.
In a statement to the prominent Bangladeshi newspaper Prothom Alo, Mahbub Alam, the advisor’s elder brother, explained that the clash erupted when two factions of BNP leaders aimed to detain the president of the banned Awami League student wing, Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), Mehedi Hasan, as he returned to the area on Sunday evening.
A dispute arose regarding the final decision about the BCL leader, resulting in a scuffle between the two factions. The situation escalated when local villagers attempted to intervene.
When Azizur Rahman attempted to mediate, he was attacked by activists from both the Chhatra Dal and Swechchha Sebak Dal.
According to Abul Bashar, the officer-in-charge of Ramganj police station, "There was a disagreement between the Chhatra Dal and Swechchha Sebak Dal activists. When Azizur Rahman tried to quell the conflict, he was targeted by one of the factions."
In the midst of the factional violence, students from the Student Movement Against Discrimination organized a protest march in Ramganj town on Sunday night, demanding stringent action against those responsible for the assault.
Recent data indicates that the BNP continues to experience internal conflicts, resulting in the deaths of various party leaders and members, highlighting the deteriorating law and order situation in the country since the current interim government, led by Mohammad Yunus, assumed power in August 2024.
Under the leadership of Khaleda Zia, the BNP collaborated with student leaders and Mohammad Yunus to unseat the democratically elected Awami League government, positioning itself as the largest political entity in Bangladesh following the downfall of its rival, Hasina.
However, significant divisions have emerged within the BNP since then, leading to the demise of several prominent leaders.
