What Happened in Gazipur? Clashes Leave 10 Injured in BNP Faction Conflict
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Dhaka, Dec 8 (NationPress) In a troubling escalation of internal strife within the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), at least ten individuals sustained injuries during violent confrontations between two factions regarding the party’s nomination for a seat in Gazipur district, as reported by local media.
The clashes commenced on Sunday evening in Kaliakair Upazila, pitting supporters of the BNP’s candidate for the Gazipur-1 constituency, Mujibur Rahman, against those backing Ishraq Siddiqui, the son of former BNP standing committee member Chowdhury Tanvir Ahmed Siddiqui, who was overlooked for the nomination.
Reports indicate that the violence led to significant destruction, with numerous party campaign offices and vehicles being vandalized and set ablaze.
Gazipur Additional Superintendent of Police (crime) confirmed the incidents, stating, "Conflicts and fires occurred between the two factions of the BNP. We are working to restore peace after discussions with both sides."
According to leading local newspaper, The Business Standard, Ishraq Siddiqui’s supporters held a protest rally in Rakhaliachala on Sunday afternoon to oppose what they termed an "unfair nomination process."
As supporters gathered, a group of 20–25 individuals purportedly loyal to Mujibur Rahman rode in on motorcycles and initiated an attack, resulting in injuries to at least ten people.
The injured were taken to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital for treatment.
Ishraq Siddiqui claimed that the assault was a calculated move to stifle dissent among grassroots leaders upset by the nomination decision. He expressed, "There is widespread frustration regarding the handling of this seat. We were conducting a peaceful protest when Mujibur Rahman's followers assaulted us. Some individuals were even detained unjustly," adding that the area now lives in fear.
Last month, in the midst of increasing factional tensions within the BNP, over 100 individuals were reported injured in a series of clashes between rival groups striving for control in Saltha upazila of Faridpur district, as per local media.
The BNP has also experienced a rise in violence, with factional disputes leading to numerous injuries and fatalities. Several analysts speculate that Khaleda Zia's BNP collaborated with the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus to undermine the democratically-elected Awami League government last year.
