Is Post-Poll Violence in Bangladesh Escalating?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Dhaka, Feb 16 (NationPress) In the wake of intensifying post-election violence across five districts in Bangladesh, at least nine individuals have sustained injuries and a residential property has been set ablaze, according to local media reports.
On Saturday night, violence escalated as six people were hurt during a clash between two factions of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in Lalpur upazila of the Natore district.
Md Mojibar Rahman, the officer-in-charge of Lalpur Police Station, informed The Daily Star, “At least six people were injured during the clash.” He also noted that two suspects were apprehended and a firearm was seized from the location, with a case subsequently filed.
In another incident, a BNP worker was injured following an alleged attack by members of Jamaat-e-Islami in the Sadar upazila of Sherpur district. The victim, 35-year-old Giasuddin Rasel, was serving as an election agent for the BNP's defeated candidate, Sansila Jebrin Priyanka.
Furthermore, in Daganbhuyan upazila of Feni district, a Jamaat worker was reportedly assaulted by BNP supporters in Dakkhin Bhabanipur village. His family reported that Nurul Absar Belal was attacked at home and was later transferred to Feni General Hospital after initial treatment at a local health center.
In Jamalpur district, a local journalist named Shamsul Huda Ratan was injured while covering the post-poll violence in Dewanganj upazila. He claimed that he was attacked by Faruk Ahmed, a senior member of the BNP's youth wing, Jubo Dal, while he was gathering information on the violent incidents.
Ratan stated, “I am still unwell. I intend to file a complaint with the police.”
Additionally, a house belonging to Jamaat supporter Shokor Akunji was set on fire by a group in Mashiali village, Phultala upazila of Khulna district on Saturday night. Shokor's son, Abdur Razzak, mentioned that they could not identify the attackers.
A recent report by the Dhaka-based Human Rights Support Society (HRSS) indicated that between October 2025 and February 14, at least 10 people lost their lives and 2,503 were injured due to election-related violence during the 13th national parliamentary election.
The HRSS findings documented over 700 incidents of violence nationwide, resulting in 10 fatalities and more than 2,500 injuries. It reported that 34 individuals suffered bullet wounds, and more than 500 properties, including houses, vehicles, businesses, election offices, and polling centers, were vandalized, looted, or set ablaze.
With Tarique Rahman poised to lead Bangladesh following the BNP’s significant victory in the 13th Parliamentary election, experts caution that the nation faces significant challenges in addressing the unrest and the rise of Islamist extremism that characterized the 18-month rule of the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus.
