Dhaka, Nov 29 (NationPress) In a deepening internal struggle within the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), more than 100 individuals were reported injured on Saturday due to a series of violent clashes between two competing factions vying for control in Saltha upazila of Faridpur district, according to local news outlets.
As per local residents, The Business Standard reported that a longstanding conflict between the supporters of BNP leaders Zahid Matubbor and Nuru Matubbor in the Gatti union has intensified over the past few weeks, leading to multiple confrontations.
On Saturday, tensions escalated once again, and supporters from both factions engaged in a violent brawl, armed with makeshift weapons such as shields, spears, and bamboo sticks.
The officer-in-charge (OC) of Saltha Police Station, K M Maruf Hasan Russell, confirmed the unrest, stating, "After extensive efforts, the situation was subdued by around 11:45 am. Additional police forces have been deployed to ensure stability and avert further chaos."
The clashes occurred in three separate locations within the Balia Bazar area of Gatti union, involving what locals described as thousands of participants from at least 20 villages, which resulted in the vandalization of around 20 homes and the looting of a cattle farm.
Witness accounts reported by The Business Standard described the scene as resembling a "warzone," prompting women and children to flee in terror in search of safety.
Medical sources confirmed that over 100 individuals sustained injuries, with 50 in critical condition admitted to Faridpur Medical College Hospital.
Earlier this month, one BNP member lost their life, and 18 others were injured in violent clashes between party nominees and those denied nominations across various districts in Bangladesh, according to local media.
The violence in the Patbazar area of Mymensingh district erupted when supporters of BNP candidate M. Iqbal Hossain confronted leader Tyabur Rahaman Hiron during a campaign event.
On the same day, another incident left ten individuals injured during clashes between two BNP factions in Laksham upazila of Cumilla district.
The BNP has seen an increase in violence, with clashes resulting in multiple fatalities and injuries. Analysts suggest that Khaleda Zia's BNP collaborated with the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus to oust the democratically elected Awami League government last year.
