Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Dhaka, February 23 (NationPress) A leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) sustained injuries following a shooting incident by unidentified attackers in the Kalabagan area of Dhaka, according to local media sources.
This occurrence, which took place on Sunday night, comes just days after the BNP, under the leadership of Tarique Rahman, successfully established a government after a significant win in the 13th Parliamentary elections.
The injured individual, Shafiqur Rahman, aged 55, holds the position of joint general secretary for the BNP in Kalabagan Ward-16. He was shot while outside the shoe market located across from the Bashundhara Shopping Complex, as reported by the Bangladeshi news outlet UNB.
A local vendor, Shahparan, who transported Shafiqur to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, mentioned that the injured leader is known for supplying shoes to various local retailers.
“Out of nowhere, a bullet struck his left hand. I cannot identify the shooter,” UNB cited the shopkeeper.
Inspector Md Faruk, who oversees the police camp at the hospital, confirmed that a businessman with gunshot wounds was admitted from Kalabagan and is currently receiving emergency care.
“We have notified the Kalabagan Police Station regarding this incident,” he added.
Just last week, at least nine individuals were injured and a residence was set on fire amid increasing violence following the elections across five districts in Bangladesh, as reported by local news.
As the violence escalated, six people were injured in a clash between two factions of BNP supporters in Lalpur upazila within the Natore district on February 14.
“During the confrontation, at least six individuals were harmed,” stated Md Mojibar Rahman, officer-in-charge of the Lalpur Police Station, as quoted by The Daily Star.
He mentioned that two suspects had been apprehended and a firearm was seized from the scene, with a case registered in relation to the event.
In a different altercation, a member of the BNP, Giasuddin Rasel, was injured in an attack allegedly executed by members of Jamaat-e-Islami in the Sadar upazila of Sherpur district.
Another incident involved a gang reportedly setting fire to the home of Jamaat supporter Shokor Akunji in Mashiali village under the Phultala upazila in Khulna district.
“We were unable to identify the assailants,” commented Shokor's son, Abdur Razzak.
According to the latest report by the Human Rights Support Society (HRSS), at least 10 individuals lost their lives and 2,503 were injured due to violence linked to the elections between October 2025 and February 14, during the 13th national parliamentary election, as per local media.
The HRSS documented more than 700 incidents of violence nationwide, resulting in 10 fatalities and over 2,500 injuries.
Additionally, it noted that around 34 individuals suffered gunshot wounds, while over 500 homes, vehicles, businesses, election offices, and polling stations were either vandalized, looted, or set ablaze.
With Tarique Rahman at the forefront, experts caution that Bangladesh is facing significant challenges in addressing the unrest and the rising tide of Islamist extremism that characterized the 18-month period of the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus.
