Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Dhaka, Feb 12 (NationPress) Unrest broke out at multiple polling stations across Bangladesh on Thursday, resulting in the tragic death of a political figure while voting was in progress nationwide, as reported by local news outlets.
These violent episodes began shortly after polling commenced, highlighting the worsening law and order situation and the unstable security environment in the country.
In the midst of this escalating turmoil, Mohibuzzaman Kochi, a leader from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), lost his life at the polling station located in Khulna district.
According to eyewitness accounts and police reports, the leading Bengali newspaper Jugantor noted that tension flared between supporters of the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami on Thursday morning near the Alia Madras Academic Building.
Yusuf Harun Majnu, the former organizing secretary of BNP in Khulna Sadar Thana, stated, "Tension was palpable at the center since the morning. The principal of Alia Madrasa was campaigning for Jamaat. When he confronted him, he shoved Mohibuzzaman Kochi, causing him to collide with a tree and sustain a fatal head injury."
Khulna Sadar Police Station's Sub Inspector Khan Faisal Rafi, who was present at the scene, confirmed, "When the conflict arose between the two groups, we acted swiftly to separate them."
Emergency Medical Officer at Khulna City Medical College Hospital, Partha Roy, reported that Kochi was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.
In another incident, a cocktail bomb attack at a polling station in Gopalganj Sadar Upazila left three individuals injured.
This attack occurred at the Reshma International School polling station on Thursday morning.
Sub-Inspector Jahidul Islam, on duty at the polling station, stated that voting had been proceeding peacefully until miscreants hurled cocktails from across the canal, injuring two on-duty Ansar members and a child accompanying a voter, causing panic among the electorate.
Additionally, Jamaat leaders claimed that their members were obstructed from voting and attacked in various regions of the country.
During a press conference on Thursday morning, the party's Assistant Secretary General Ehsanul Mahbub Zubair made these allegations.
"The elections are taking place in a festive atmosphere. Yet, there have been reports of attacks on Jamaat leaders, activists, and agents across the nation, along with voting obstructions. For instance, Jamaat members faced violent attacks at a polling station in Barisal, and there was significant violence in the Bhola-2 constituency, with militants disrupting agents in Comilla-8," quoted Bonik Barta.
Zubair added, "Voters are being hindered from accessing polling stations in Hatia, Noakhali, and other locations. We believe those responsible are desperate and troubled. We have alerted the administration, the Election Commission, and those accountable to take appropriate actions and urged the administration to remain impartial."
The critical parliamentary elections in Bangladesh are unfolding amidst rising political strife and violence, with numerous parties expressing concerns regarding the integrity of the electoral process.
