Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 26 (NationPress) The Pakistan Government has approved the National team’s participation in the match against India during the ICC Men's T20 World Cup in Colombo. This decision was reportedly made following a discussion between Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi and Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif in Islamabad on Monday.
PCB chairman Naqvi mentioned in a social media update that a definitive announcement regarding this matter would be made by either Friday or Monday. Nevertheless, sources informed IANS that Pakistan is set to play against India in the T20 World Cup.
According to a source, “Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi briefed the Prime Minister about the ICC T-20 World Cup and the current situation with the Bangladesh Cricket Board.
There were speculations that Pakistan might consider boycotting their match against India if not the entire tournament, to express solidarity with Bangladesh, which has been replaced by Scotland in the T20 World Cup schedule due to security concerns regarding their matches in India.
Naqvi stated, “I had a productive meeting with Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif. I briefed him on the ICC matter, and he directed that we explore all options. A final decision will be made either on Friday or next Monday,” in a post on X.
Although the Pakistan government has approved the participation in the ICC T20 World Cup and the match against India, reports suggest they may undertake some form of protest beforehand.
Sources indicated that “the team might wear black armbands during the match or release a statement supporting Bangladesh prior to the event,” according to Telecom Asia Sport.
Naqvi also holds the position of Interior Minister in the Pakistan government, making him the second-in-command after PM Sharif. By delegating this decision to him and the PCB, the Pakistan government aims to increase pressure on the ICC.
Furthermore, sources revealed that PM Sharif has instructed the PCB to send a letter to the ICC regarding the Bangladesh issue. Notably, Pakistan is the only board among the top national associations that supported the Bangladesh Cricket Board during the ICC board meeting when their request for a venue change was denied.
