Seoul, Dec 11 (NationPress) A special counsel team has indicted ex-Justice Minister Park Sung-jae on insurrection charges related to former President Yoon Suk Yeol's brief martial law declaration.
Led by special counsel Cho Eun-suk, the team alleges that Park played a significant role in the insurrection by convening a meeting of senior officials from the Justice Ministry after the martial law was declared in December 2024. He allegedly ordered the potential deployment of prosecutors to a related authority, directed the Korea Correctional Service to assess detention facility capacities, and placed officials from the Korea Immigration Service on standby for potential travel bans, as reported by Yonhap News Agency.
Moreover, Park faces accusations of abusing his power by directing the ministry to create documents that justified the martial law imposition.
He is also indicted for violating a law against improper solicitation, allegedly responding to a request from Yoon's spouse, Kim Keon Hee, to assist in clearing her of multiple criminal allegations.
Previously, the special counsel team had sought arrest warrants for Park twice, but both requests were denied by the court, leading to his indictment without physical detention.
The investigation is ongoing, targeting all suspicions linked to Yoon's martial law declaration, and has also led to the indictment of former Prime Minister Han Duck-soo and former Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok for failing to appoint Constitutional Court justices post-Yoon's impeachment last December.
Additionally, Han and three former presidential officials are under indictment for abuse of power concerning the appointment of two justice candidates without proper vetting.
In a related development last November, special prosecutors probing Yoon's failed martial law attempt conducted a raid on another special counsel team to gather evidence pertaining to Kim Keon Hee's alleged involvement in the matter.
Cho's team executed a court-issued warrant to seize documents from special counsel Min Joong-ki's team, which is investigating corruption charges against the former first lady. The sought-after documents included Kim's phone records.
Reportedly, the special prosecutors uncovered indications of Kim's role in the martial law declaration during their investigation into Park's involvement.
In May of last year, Kim allegedly communicated with Park regarding the prosecution's inquiry into her various corruption allegations.
Cho's team suspects that Yoon's martial law declaration may have been partly motivated by his desire to shield his wife from her legal troubles.
