Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Dec 13 (NationPress) The Leader of Opposition in the Odisha Assembly and Biju Janata Dal (BJD) head, Naveen Patnaik, revealed on Saturday that he will not accept the recently increased salary and allowances associated with the LoP position. Instead, he has requested that this amount be allocated for the benefit of the underprivileged.
In a letter to Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Patnaik expressed his profound appreciation for the support he has garnered from the people of Odisha over his extensive public service spanning more than 25 years.
The former Chief Minister articulated that he feels a deep sense of obligation to the citizens of the state, whose love and trust have also extended to his late father, Biju Patnaik, who also served as Chief Minister.
“I have been fortunate to receive the warmth, affection, and backing of the people of Odisha for over 25 years. I am extremely grateful for their support and the legacy of love for my late father,” he conveyed in his letter.
Patnaik referred to a previous family decision made in 2015 to donate their ancestral property, Anand Bhawan in Cuttack, for public benefit, stating that this latest action aligns with the same commitment to public service.
He confirmed his decision to decline the enhanced salary and allowances that the Odisha Legislative Assembly recently approved for the Leader of the Opposition.
Patnaik urged the Chief Minister to ensure that the funds he relinquishes are directed towards initiatives aimed at uplifting the lives of the state's poor and disadvantaged.
The Odisha Assembly recently approved a significant increase in salaries and allowances for MLAs, ministers, and those in constitutional positions, raising the Leader of Opposition's monthly earnings to approximately Rs 3.62 lakh.
This decision has sparked political discourse, particularly in light of Patnaik’s stance amid criticism regarding the tripling of legislators' salaries.
According to the new legislation, the basic monthly salary for an MLA has risen from Rs 35,000 to Rs 90,000. Furthermore, members will now receive a sumptuary allowance of Rs 98,000 per month, up from Rs 40,000.
Specifically, the Chief Minister will receive a total monthly remuneration of Rs 3.74 lakh, which includes a basic salary of Rs 1 lakh, a sumptuary allowance of Rs 1.83 lakh, and Rs 91,000 for car allowances. Other office-bearers' salaries range from Rs 3.50 lakh to Rs 3.68 lakh per month, depending on their position.
