New Delhi, Feb 11 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi voiced his profound sorrow on Wednesday regarding the tragic shooting incident at a school in British Columbia, Canada. He extended heartfelt condolences to the families suffering from their losses and wished for a swift recovery for the injured.

"I am deeply shocked by the horrific shooting in Canada. My heartfelt sympathies go to the families who have lost their loved ones, and I wish a rapid recovery to those injured. India stands in solidarity with the Canadian people during this time of immense grief," PM Modi shared on X.

This statement followed the devastating event which left nine individuals dead, allegedly caused by an individual, possibly a woman, who later took her own life in a coal mining town of British Columbia on Tuesday (local time), as reported by officials.

The federal police Chief Superintendent Ken Floyd disclosed that seven victims were located deceased within Tumbler Ridge's local high school, and two others were found in a nearby residence.

During a virtual press briefing, he confirmed the alleged shooter was also discovered dead at the school.

Floyd, who leads the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) northern district, stated that nearly 100 staff and students had been safely evacuated from the school.

There were signs suggesting the shooter was a woman, or an individual dressed in female clothing.

Due to privacy concerns and the ongoing investigation, Floyd did not reveal whether the shooter was a student or an adult, but confirmed the suspect matched the description provided in an active shooter alert sent to local phones.

The alert described the alleged shooter as a brown-haired female dressed in a dress.

Two individuals suffering severe injuries were airlifted to a hospital, while 25 others were assessed for injuries at a local medical facility, according to police.

British Columbia Premier David Eby labeled the incident an "unimaginable tragedy" and assured that the government would provide maximum support to community members in the upcoming days.

Floyd mentioned that the motives behind the attack are still unknown.

"It may be challenging for us to uncover the 'why', but we will diligently work to understand what occurred," he stated.

The residence was in close proximity to the school, and the shootings were linked, Floyd confirmed.

Tumbler Ridge is a small coal mining community with a population of approximately 2,400, situated in a region renowned for its dinosaur tracks and fossils.
