Why Was PM Modi Honoured with the 'Key to the City of Buenos Aires' During His Historic Visit?

Buenos Aires, July 6 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi was awarded the 'Key to the City of Buenos Aires' during his two-day official visit to Argentina, symbolizing the strengthening of relations between India and this South American nation.

On his official X account, PM Modi expressed, 'Honoured to receive the Key to the City of Buenos Aires' from Jorge Macri, Chief of the City Government of Buenos Aires.'

Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, remarked on social media, 'This ceremonial honour acknowledges PM Modi's role in fortifying India-Argentina ties.'

This visit was particularly significant as it marked the first occurrence in 57 years that an Indian Prime Minister engaged in bilateral discussions in Argentina. The Indian diaspora gathered in large numbers outside his hotel, celebrating with flags and traditional music.

PM Modi's stop in Argentina was part of a five-country tour where he received notable accolades.

Previously, in Trinidad and Tobago, he was awarded 'The Order of the Republic', their highest civilian honour, becoming the first foreign leader to do so. During that visit, both nations established six agreements for closer cooperation. PM Modi acknowledged that the award represents not just his achievement but the pride of all 1.4 billion Indians.

Before receiving this honour, PM Modi paid homage to the statues of Mahatma Gandhi and Rabindranath Tagore in Buenos Aires, following high-level discussions with Argentina's President Javier Milei.

During his tribute to Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation, PM Modi emphasized that Gandhiji's eternal vision and ideals will continue to guide humanity. He stated, 'Paid tributes to Mahatma Gandhi in Buenos Aires. His timeless vision and noble ideals will always guide humanity.'

Additionally, he paid respect to the legendary poet, Rabindranath Tagore, highlighting India's pride in Tagore's contributions to culture and history, stating, 'Gurudev Tagore had visited Argentina in 1924 and left a lasting impression.'

Earlier in the day, PM Modi began his Argentine visit by honoring General Jose de San Martin, the Father of the Nation, at Plaza San Martin, acknowledging his role as a liberator in Argentina and other South American countries.

PM Modi described San Martin's courage and leadership as pivotal to Argentina's history, saying, 'Paid homage to General Jose de San Martin in Buenos Aires. His life remains a symbol of patriotism.'

On Friday, PM Modi conducted extensive talks with President Milei, characterizing the meeting as 'excellent' and noting substantial advancements in bilateral relations.

PM Modi stated, 'We celebrate 75 years of diplomatic relations, and we've made significant progress, but the road ahead is even more promising.'

The discussions aimed to diversify trade and enhance cooperation in sectors like agriculture, defence, energy, and security. Post-Argentina, PM Modi will attend the BRICS summit in Brazil and visit Namibia. Both leaders agreed on Argentina supplying lithium and shale gas to India, crucial for India's energy security.

PM Modi was warmly welcomed in Buenos Aires, marking the third leg of his five-nation tour. Upon arrival, he was greeted by President Milei, reflecting the deepening friendship between their nations.

Both leaders emphasized broadening economic engagement, identifying potential in pharmaceuticals and sports, showcasing the visit's importance in strengthening India-Argentina ties.

Upon his arrival, PM Modi also paid tribute at the historic San Martin Memorial, a symbol of national pride, honoring the legacy of General San Martin as a freedom fighter. This visit represents India's commitment to deepen partnerships with Argentina and expand its footprint in Latin America.

Earlier on Friday, the Indian community in Buenos Aires warmly welcomed PM Modi, with cultural celebrations including traditional dances and patriotic slogans.

PM Modi expressed his gratitude for the warm reception in a post, stating, 'Distance is no barrier when it comes to cultural connect!'

He expressed enthusiasm for his visit, adding, 'I'm eager to be meeting President Javier Milei and holding detailed talks.'
