New Delhi, June 3 (NationPress) On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached out to the Chief Ministers of Assam and Sikkim, along with Manipur's Governor Ajay Bhalla, to assess the severe flood conditions affecting the northeastern states and pledged full support in combating the flood crisis.
The northeastern region, encompassing Assam, Sikkim, Tripura, Manipur, and Arunachal Pradesh, has recently experienced torrential rain, which has disrupted daily life and severed vital supply routes to remote areas.
PM Modi reassured the Chief Ministers of Assam and Sikkim, as well as the Governor of Manipur, that the Central Government would provide all necessary assistance for ongoing relief and rehabilitation efforts.
The relentless downpours in the northeastern states, including Assam, Sikkim, and Manipur, have led to alarming rises in river water levels. Major rivers such as the Brahmaputra, Pachnoi, and Kushiyara are reported to be flowing dangerously high. Extensive areas of land have been submerged, confining residents to their homes and prompting evacuations in low-lying regions.
Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to X to share that PM Modi had contacted him regarding the flood situation in the state.
“I updated the Prime Minister on how the continuous rainfall in Assam and neighboring areas has resulted in flooding, impacting numerous lives. I also informed him about the relief operations initiated by our state government,” he stated on X.
“The Prime Minister expressed his concern and assured complete support from the Central Government for our relief and rehabilitation initiatives. We are grateful for his steadfast guidance and support for the people of Assam,” he added.
Sikkim's Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang also took to X to express gratitude towards the Prime Minister for his support concerning the landslide and flood situation in the state.
He reaffirmed that the state administration is fully dedicated to managing the crisis and providing all necessary aid to those in need.
In Manipur, personnel from the Army and Assam Rifles are collaborating in the relief operations, having rescued over 1,000 individuals affected by floods in the Imphal East and Imphal West districts.
A flood bulletin released by the Manipur administration on Monday indicated that more than 56,000 individuals are affected across at least 174 villages.
