New Delhi, Feb 13 (NationPress) Former Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla remarked that outlining the forthcoming steps in an already strong strategic partnership will be a crucial aspect of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's upcoming discussions with US President Donald Trump at the White House on Thursday.
In an exclusive interview with IANS prior to the highly awaited meeting, Shringla emphasized that the timing of PM Modi's "significant visit" to Washington, shortly after President Trump took office, highlights the robust nature of the India-US friendship and their strategic connections.
"Prime Minister Modi is the fourth world leader to engage with President Trump during his second term, and the first Indian Prime Minister to meet a sitting US president so soon after their inauguration. This underlines the significance both nations place on their relationship. The meeting is pivotal and a manifestation of both leaders' commitment to advancing this partnership, both bilaterally and on a global scale," the former Foreign Secretary told IANS.
According to the experienced diplomat, while there are challenges that need addressing—such as fostering a fair trade relationship, dealing with illegal immigration, and India enhancing its purchase of American security equipment—these can be effectively navigated by both leaders.
"I am confident that the rapport between Prime Minister Modi and President Trump enables them to discuss and grasp the broader context of their relationship. Naturally, there are issues, as every nation has with its closest allies, but the proximity of the partnership often brings more challenges. I believe both leaders will find ways to manage these matters, whether in trade, immigration, defense cooperation, or other areas, leading to a convergence in their relationship," he stated.
Shringla, who has previously held the position of India's Ambassador to the US, anticipates "only positive outcomes" from this visit, reaffirming the strong connection between PM Modi and President Trump.
He identifies three primary focus areas for the discussions: reestablishing the next steps in their strategic partnership, enhancing the economic dimensions of their relationship, and strengthening people-to-people ties.
"It's essential to explore how this partnership can gain greater economic significance, utilizing mutual trust to boost bilateral trade, allowing India to integrate into the US supply chain and vice versa. Accelerating negotiations on a Free Trade Agreement will be critical," he articulated.
Shringla noted that Trump recognizes the contributions of the Indian American community to the US economy and is likely to address legal mobility and migration issues, including increasing H-1B visas and streamlining Green Card processes.
"We are prepared to repatriate illegal immigrants who are documented as Indian citizens, but this also necessitates a concurrent discussion on legal mobility and migration. In line with President Trump's vision of manufacturing in America, attracting investments requires talent and human resources. India is ideally positioned to provide this, as we have skilled, law-abiding individuals who adapt seamlessly to new environments," Shringla explained.
The former Foreign Secretary also suggested involving tech billionaire Elon Musk, one of Trump's key allies, in investing in India.
"Elon Musk has become a significant figure in the Trump administration. His visionary approach is crucial. Therefore, India should seek greater engagement with Musk. We must encourage him to invest and manufacture in India while removing any barriers. Welcoming him to India and leveraging Indian talent and resources for manufacturing to access other Asian markets is vital. In this context, PM Modi's meeting with Musk could yield substantial economic and political benefits," he concluded.
